I didn't know punches to the throat were illegal.
    I've never heard that before.
The throat is very close to the chin after all.

You don't see many fouls done to the throat, but its illegal. Do a google search on the fight.

"In 1997, Nelson lost his title to Genaro Hernandez when beaten on points in twelve rounds. He was almost disqualified when he accidentally hit Hernandez in the throat after the bell to finish round seven and Hernandez lay on the floor for several minutes. However, Hernandez chose to continue, allowing Nelson to lose by the more honorable way of the judge's decision "

    Interesting.

Rocky Marciano hit Ezzard Charles in the throat in their first fight, apparently Ezzard's neck and throat swelled up badly after the fight.

Dempsey caught Tunney in the throat, too, bad him hoarse for a few days afterward.

Maybe it was fair game back then, or maybe just rough stuff you'd expect from guys like Dempsey and Marciano.

Nelson punched Hernandez after the bell, so that needs to be taken into consideration regarding the possible DQ. I'll need to rewatch it and see exactly whats said about the punch after the bell, which was accidentally delivered to the adams apple area of the throat.

I've seen that fight a couple of times recently, and I'm not at all convinced that the punch landed on the throat....it looked to me like it landed on the chin and layed Hernandez out....it was after the bell though.

As Robbi said, it might yet be the fact that it happened after the bell.

I rank flash Elorde #1 based on accomplishments, he defended the undisputed belt at this weight like 13 times, what a feat.

Yeah. Marciano and Dempsey would never have stooped to that. :)

Hahaha, well i'm not yet convinced it was the actual throat blow that he was almost DQ'ed for.
