Since the cruiserweight division is on a high with fighters like Haye and Mormeck making waves, it is perhaps time to atempt a top 10 list. Top 10 (or 5 if you preferr) cruisers since the division was founded.
Sadly there is no depth to this ******* division: 10 Marvin Camel 9 O'Neil Bell 8 Orlin Norris 7 Juan Carlos Gomez 6 Al Cole 5 Jean Marc Mormeck 4 Carlos DeLeon 3 David Haye 2 Dwight Muhammad Qawi 1 Evander Holyfield Mentions: Ossie Ocasio, S.T. Gordon, Lee Roy Murphy, Jeff Lampkin, Bobby Czyz, Anaclet Wamba, Dariusz Michalczewski, Nate Miller, Carl Thompson, Marcelo Dominguez, Fabrice Tiozzo, Johnny Nelson, Vassily Jirov and Virgil Hill The fact that a fighter with one bout in the division gets a mention shows you the weakness of the division. Toney's proven (I know who is #1 ) steroid abuses keeps him out. Although it should be noted technically this list could be superb as Cruiserweight was used in Britain to describe the then new 175 division.
This is a good list of fighters. I agree with all the names, and most of the order. Interesting thing about cruiserweight is that a lot of its best participants either came from some other division or eventually wound up elsewhere. One of the reasons why we'll never see an extravagant list of cruiserweights is that it serves as a transitional division. Great fighters never stay there long. In fact, Haye is debuting as a heavyweight soon. Holyfield left after compiling maybe 18 fights. Orlin Norris dropped down in the 90's to win a cruiser title when he was past his prime. Qawi was a bit past it when he moved up. Fighters like Roy Jones and James Toney used it as a stepping stone weight division. Thomas Hearns and Virgil Hill finished Their careers there. Men like Ossie Ocasio and Herbie Hide went down to cruiser because they couldn't hack it at heavyweight. The list goes on and on. The Cruiserweight class will likley never see a long term reigning great lineal champion like a Marvin Hagler, Archie Moore or Joe Louis, because it simply isn't a marquee venue for big named prize fighters.
Where is Tyrone Booze? Magne Havna? Bobby Czyz, Johnny Nelson, James Warring, Crawford Ashley... I could go on. Cruisers are so funny.
You're right. For some reason I thought that he may have picked up a fight or two there in the interim between fighting John Ruiz and fighting at lightheavyweight. My error. As for Toney, he did indeed have some bing fights at cruiserweight, but his career was not defined by his accomplishments at that weight class. That was my point about the division. It seems to be a temporary stopping point for a lot of fighters.
Beleive it or not, the Cruiserweight division today is decent. Moving Cruiserweight up to 200 pounds has increased the talent in the division. For the first time in a long time, some smaller heavies are moving down...Byrd, and Hide. In addition, perhaps the best young prospect in the upper weights is a curiserweight. That man is Alexander Alekseev.
Holyfield 1 De leon 2 Cole 3 Camel 4 Haye 5 Bell 6 Norris 7 Mormeck 8 Nelson 9 Gomez 10 Honorables , Wamba, Ratliff, Makhitini, Booze, Pritchard, Warring, Ocasio, Miller and Grant...
