Filipinos born and raised in the Philippines have always considered themselves as asian. Always. Some of the Fil-Americans are the ones who are insisting that they are Pacific islanders.
From what I've learned, the reason why most Filipinos have Spanish last names is because the names were given by the Spanish conquerors, not because they have Spanish blood. It's like how the African Americans were given English last names by their slave masters. What kind of name is Pacquiao, though? About the "Filipinized" Spanish. Any word in Spanish that has a double-L "(ll) in it is pronounced as "y." Example: Padilla. It's pronounced Padee-ya. But Filipinos would incorrectly pronounce it "Padeel-ya."
Yes. That's true. Most Filipinos have spanish last names, I think because the Spanish government were having a hard time evry tax and census season, back then. Either the natives didnt have a "proper" last name or it was just too hard to remember or spell. So the government decreed that they will release a list of spanish last names that the locals must adopt as their new ones. A lot of them chose "Cruz" and "Dela Cruz" because you could sign a legal document even if you're illiterate. Just write an X on the paper.
Technically they are Americans because they are from North America. They are not American "citizens" (USA) but they are Americans because they're from North Americans. There is a difference.
I consider Armenian to be European. Geographically, it's in Europe (though it's right on the border), geopolitically it's in Europe, linguistically it's in Europe and religiously it has more in common with Europe than with Asia. Also, Tua isn't Asian by any definition. Maidana's about half Chinese, but he's third generation Argentinian, so I don't think that really counts. I guess you could go either way. My quick top 10: 1) Pacquiao 2) John 3) Hasegawa 4) Donaire 5) Wonjongkam 6) Khan 7) K. Kameda 8 ) Poonsawat 9) Golovkin 10) Nashiro If you don't count Khan, then Nishioka comes next. And don't get on me about Golovkin. He's Kazakh, and definitely Asian.
Hang on a minute there. I'm from England and I can tell you for certain that Bolton is in England and not Pakistan! Bernard Hopkins is American, not African....Correct!?
that post is just one inconsistant hypocritical mess written by a guy with the education of a 12 year old kid. Isnt most of Russia in Asia - why arnt Russian fighters added to the list then?? Also many of the early American fighters are ethnically from other continent - are they not American?
Khan is indeed Asian. Yes, he has spent his life growing up as a British citizen, but that doesn't disqualify his ethnicity -- he comes from Pakistan. I'm exactly the same as him, and I'm normally classified as a 'British Asian' on forms and such. And I'm surprised that there was no mention of Hasegawa on that list...
Erm, where has Amir Khan fought for all of his pro career so far? Who has he fought that is better than everyone on Hasegawa's record? And have you seen Hasegawa's recent performances? And you have David Tua on your list, a man who has had 1 fight in two and a half years. Nuff said. Just admit you forgot/don't know Hasegawa :good
