My top 10 hwt champion in chronological order. I don't rate before Johnson since films are poor/non existent.

There are a lot of variables in any top ten but in this one I see no way to put Cassius Clay above Joe Louis. I will never understand those lists having him above Joe let alone at number one.

Well most observers of the sport put Ali at # 1, so you will have to go off and do a bit of pondering.:yep

first time I have Bowe in my top 10, he was so talented for that brief stretch though he could have beaten anyone. top 10 lists are tough there are so many great fighters and variables to consider.

 

Bowe did not hold the championship for any real time and had a checkered career at best. Lots of potential for sure but he squandered it.

 

Schmeling was so awesome he gets two spots in the second 10, eh?

 

Ah, yes, you noticed that...

If you look carefully, you'll see that one was Schmeling ( who famously KOd the Brown Bomber) while the other was the lesser-known Schmelling.

Upon further reflection, since he had not many great wins, I'm dropping the two-l dude.

 

BAsed mostly on resume and accomplishments, with just a little added in from how fighters looked and my perception of H2H, my list would go something like:

1. Ali
2. Louis
3. Holmes
4. Foreman
5. Lewis
6. Marciano
7. Holyfield
8. Frazier
9. Tyson
10. Liston

With 7-9 being able to switch order depending on my mood.

Honorable mentions to the likes of Dempsey, Johnson, Klitchko brothers, Patterson, Norton, Bowe, Charles, Walcott, Schmeling, etc.

 

You got the right 10 and almost in the right order. Move Holmes and Holy down three places each and......BINGO !

 

Louis, Ali is really 1 A and 1 B, every one else is levels below the 2 mention here.

3 Marciano, clean out era.

4 Lewis, clean out era also, but suffer some defeats here or there.

5 Holmes, Long rein, did not unify, if did, would rank higher perhaps.

6 Tyson, short prime, clean out the 1980's. Fun to watch.

7 Jack Johnson, beat the best fighters on the way up, thought title rein is something to consider.

8 Jack Dempsey. First super star of the ring, made the boxing world a million $ game, perhaps boxing's biggest draw. Did not defend against the best, so it hurts him.

9 Jim Jeff, rein from 1899-1905, really only to failed to face Johnson during his rein.

10 John L Sullivan, first heavyweight champ, in his prime did clean out era, past his prime he did not face Jackson, but did face Jim Corbett, who had a draw with Jackson. Was what really got boxing out of the bare knuck era into the glove era.

 

A top 10 with larry holmes, joe louis and walcott and without jack johnson or ezzard charles is plain ******ed given he beat joe louis and beat walcott 3 times. A top 10 with Lennox Lewis is also ******ed unless this is a head to head ranking and you assume lennox would use his size to tire out guys. He has less than 45 fights and no real notable wins. He beat a washed up holyfield and washed up tyson and a klitschko who loss to chris bryd. And how can Larry holmes rank better than spinks when spinks beat larry twice and knocked out larry's best opponent in 5 rounds, when larry nearly lsot to him? No hwchamp has been beaten twice by a lhw, except holmes. If anything spinks should be in your top 10. And how is dempsey 4 when he got knocked out ice cold and they had to throw a bucket of ice water to wake him up as he didn't rise from the mat for over 30 seconds and was KO in 1 round by fireman jim flynn who jack johnson completely dominated when he was a balding fat old man? atsch

This ranking stinks.
