    Boilmaker, here you go

Denver Ed Martin was in the middle of a nice winning streak, with dominant wins over Hank Griffin and bob armstrong to capture the colored heavyweight championship. A fight between he and Jeffries in early 1903 while Martin was fresh off his winning streak would have been ideal

Firstly, that quote says he will challenge the winner. EVeryone would like to challenge the world champion, it certainly doesnt seem like a promise. Saying that i agree that he was on a nice win streak (your quote has no date, but it would seem to be after that 15 round win in July 02). This was followed by the ND, but i agree, Ed Smith would have been a good challenger in 1903. The problem is that when Jeffries fought Fitzsimmons it was in July 02, the same date as Smiths win. But it was half a world away (remember there were no planes in them days). So, by the time Denver returned to the US to challenge Jeffries it was Feb 03. It would have been great, to have a fight then, but on arriving, Denver first fought Jack Johnson in Feb 03. He lost this fight! From this point on, his stock dropped to Zero. He followed this with a 3rd round loss to Armstrong and 1st round loss to McVea. There was no more than month or so's chance for this fight to happen. It is not realistic for Gunboat to get the shot.

Jeffries always stated that Jackson's right cross was a thing of wonder, that every other opponent afterward didn't bare in comparison when they threw the same shot. True, Jackson was an older man then, but I give Jeffries props for fighting him anyways, as well as Hank Griffin.

    lmao

The man who claimed a 42-0 record in bare knuckle contests, and who called out Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis on the same night, but was bombed out in a single round against the faded Bert Cooper.

I nominate (and its a travesty he has not been mentioned yet) 'Lucky' Luther McCarty.

Read the line again. it says "martin IT is announced, will challenge". it does not say, Martin HE announced. Therefore when there talking about IT, they mean boxing promoters have made arrangements for martin to fight the winner of jeffries-fitz

no way vitali could ever beat wlad. wlad has accomplished much more than vitali and would kill vitali in a h2h matchup.

Well, Not easily. But "The Bionic Right Hand" would get the job done. I think Gerrie was the best of the South African Heavyweights.

I think Jeffries was a fine Champion, but his win over Jackson means exactly NOTHING ,Jackson was an incurable alcoholic even while in England his decline started after the fight with Corbett.
Burns was not as good as Jeffries ,but he did take his title around the world taking on challengers regularly, and they were not ex champs who were 40 years old and coming out of retirement either, and he DID meet his most dangerous challenger ,something Jeffries DID NOT DO.
Gunboat Smith, Johnson's sparring partner stated that Johnson could have put Jeffries away when he wanted to, but carried him to inflict punishment.

Coetzee beat Schutte twice. Some of Duplooy's wins were, shall we say questionable?
