I guess it would have to be taken in context of the sport in which the athlete participates. While being strong and having good stamina is essential, it is not what I necessarily think of as being requisite for being an athletic boxer. At the top level, all boxers are excellent athletically in general, but in comparison to their contemporaries is another story. To get to brass tacks, being awkward and uncoordinated would connotate poor balance, being slow of foot and reflexes, and not smooth of motion. Balance, and speed(hand and foot), power, fluidity, are things I think of more when I think of athletic boxers. Most people can gain strength and stamina, but not all can box. You don't need to be an athletic boxer to gain strength or stamina. I wouldn't call Margarito, or Soto Karass or Cornelius Bundrage or Pavlik or Bika athletic boxers. In comparison to other boxers though, Froch is at a disadvantage most of the time when it comes to foot and handpseed, reflexes, coordination and, well, athleticism. He is strong, sturdy and has good lung power. PS- Smart edit.
Roy Jones Meldrick Taylor Mike Tyson (give me any one fighter with his build who possessed that type of explosivity and durability all in one package).
All of the above would be necessary to some degree. But some things can be taught, some can't. The term natural athlete would not apply to a Froch or Margo. But it would to a Jones or Martinez. They combine speed and balance and coordination with their strength. All these guys have some gifts to an extent.
Whoever listed Wlad must be joking. There's a reason he fights so slow, it's because he has a **** gas tank. Watch the Purrity and Brewster fights. He must have nightmares of running out of gas in a fight all the time.
Only one way to decide this and it is to get them all on 'Superstars'. Lets hope Khan doesn't fall off his bike ala Kevin Keegan and shatter his jaw.
Floyd, Gary Russell Jr., Donaire, Sergio, Lomachenko to name a few. These guys are all fast of hand and foot and very clearly have exceptional reflexes.
