A lot of people on here are picking Bowe's 1992 title winning effort over Holyfield as being one of the top heavyweight wins of all time. My list includes the following: Frazier W15 Ali Schmeling KO12 Louis Douglas KO10 Tyson Ali KO8 Foreman Bowe W12 Holyfield Louis KO1 Schmeling Clay KO7 Liston Spinks W15 Holmes Holyfield KO11 Tyson Louis KO13 Conn Any others that should be on this list?
What is your criteria? Im thinking Johnson stopping Jeffries to shatter the illusion of whiter superiority at heavyweight, but I don't think it fits if you're looking at this from a purely physical standpoint.
foreman frazier and ali frazier 2 My top 5 would be Frazier/Ali Schmeling/Louis Douglas/Tyson Ali/Foreman Foreman/Frazier
Really can't be bothered to type out a top ten list, but,as most regard the two as being the best heavyweights of all time,I think you would have to include Louis's loss to Schmeling and Ali's loss to Ken Norton as the two greatest victories in heavyweight history.Neither men was in his prime, but Louis wasn't too far away from hitting his peak while Norton decisively handeled the very best version of the post-layoff Ali. Michael Spinks decisive first victory over the man many regard as the third greatest heavyweight deserves a solid mention, too. It's a win that has become grossly underrated in recent years.A little like Mike Spinks himself,I suppose.
What about Jersey Joe stopping Ez to become the oldest Heavyweight champion in history on the third try after multiple retirements and myriad wasted opportunities? Maybe not in the top 5, but definitely a personal favourite of mine given the context... and the fact Walcott is one of my all time favourites
1. Frazier over Ali 2. Schmeling over Louis 3. Ali over Foreman 4. Douglas over Tyson 5. Spinks over Holmes 6. Foreman over Moorer 7. Patterson over Johannson (II) 8. Braddock over Baer 9. Foreman over Frazier 0. Clay over Liston HM: Johnson over Jeffries, Dempsey over Willard, Walcott over Charles (III), Marciano over Walcott, Holyfield over Tyson (I), Bowe over Holyfield (I), Holyfield over Bowe (II)
If I ever did claim him to be,I certainly don't recall doing so.My main argument with you in the past was your excuses for Joe Louis losing.Wasn't it that he was staying up too late, playing a little too much golf? I think they even used that one in the Joe Louis story
Louis had probably his best performance ever - Baer - before he met Schmeling. Claiming that he wasn´t prime when having seen this fight is a bit funny IMO.
come on man, i'm a big Jones fan but it can't come close to comparing to one's mentioned in this thread. Talking about that win anyways, i think it was a borderline great win. John Ruiz had some nice wins and Jones who started his career at Light Middleweight/Middleweight, going up to Heavyweight and beating John Ruiz is impressive, no matter what anyone thinks.
You use to claim Louis as prime all the time, probably just to get under my skin. No biggie though, theres no reason to rehash what happeneded there, over here. As far as the rest of you post.....these were not excuses but well documented facts. Is it a loss? Sure it is. It was Louis' responsibility to be prepared. But it bares examination when discussing the fight itself.
