I think Marcel Cerdan was nobbing Edith Piath before his plane crash. Anyway... I do find it hard to judge the old guys agsinst the more modern fighters. We only have the word of the real old timers to go on when considering how good the early pre 60's boxers were and everyone thinks that the generation they was in was the best with the standards slipping since then. Bob Fitzsimmons was very early but I believe still worth a mention due to his acheivements. Whether his technical skills were as good as many of the fighters since I do not know but he must have been fairly decent and had a huge punch. You are right about the different lists. Especialy as with todays fragmented divisions alot more fighters have the chance to become belt holders. It may be daft of me to think but I like to think that if you won the belt back then you had a real claim to be the best in the world in a different sense to alot of todays fighters. Plus you have to take into account we have more weight classes now so legends like Calzaghe would have had to have fought the best all the time instead of just at this moment of his career.
:good Marcel was a ****ing ledge... he put his punches together beautifully. If only he'd fought Robinson, what a fight that could have been. Armstrong was the least impressive to watch but there is a beauty about his distance closing and stamina... He was not classy or powerful but he would have been very tough to beat. Kind of like Juan Diaz without the class but a lot more strength and stamina. Robinson and Louis were a class apart and there timing was simply unmatchable. Louis was a calculating and careful performer with the type of variety you just don't see anymore. I would pick him against ANY heavyweight, even Ali. Robinson had all the class and slippery skills of Mayweather but add to that the tenacity of a peak Barrera or Duran plus arguably the best left hook of all time and you have the Perfect fighter no argument. Robinson- Mayweather...... I'm watching that from ringside if I get to heaven
I dont think that there was anything primitive about fighters like Bob Fitzsimmons. They were differnt because they fought under a different rule set which required diferent methods. and at the end of the day the physics were the same. He was still a middleweight taking heavyweight punches and getting leaned on by some guy weighing 200 lbs. He was also taking them out generaly with a single punch or combination. That kind of briliance transcends eras.
I did not mean it in a technical sense but you are right. I meant that in general sport and in terms of atheltic performance we have seen improvement.
Personally I think the real elite of any era can called great. Just look at the middle weights that came before Robinson and Louis. Both those two fighters were amazing and in the top tree of there divisions in a ATG sense but I would still pick someone like Max Baer to make a huge impact in todays heavy weight division. Obviously Max let himself down by not being dedicated enough but he still had very credible technique and a devasting punch that would place him near the top of the division at any time.
Sure... I respect your greater understanding of bygone eras. He gets my respect too. But equally modern guys have to be respected too and there is far more evidence then a shrivelled newspaper to support their capabilities. Alls good though and maybe my appreciation for the 'newspaper' era will grow as I get older. Hope so because there is clearly a lifetime of information for me to digest. :good
