It's up for debate if SRR is the greatest fighter of all time (IMO he isnt, Greb pips him), but he is certainly not the greatest puncher p4p ever! No way! He had very very good power, but he isnt the greatest by a long stretch. I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Ocasr De La Hoya yet
Power is only one attribute to a punch. Almost all of his shots were timed perfectly, accurate, incredibly fast, thrown with maximum leverage and came in clusters(each shot equally powerful). Ray Robinson and Joe Louis are the two greatest punchers, for me. Followed closely by Mike Tyson. Its hard to put into words. Their knockout punches look to have a delayed reaction. Like their head was hit so hard and snapped so rapidly it knocked air particles into the canvas, which bounced back off the canvas into their heads and held them still for a quarter of a second, which built up tension, which then catapulted them toward the canvas in a perfectly straight line like a bullet from a gun....yeeeeeah. Robinson and Louis' opponents body's reacted like they'd been shot.
I just dont buy it. I mean, Langford, Fitzsimmons, Archie Moore, Joe Louis and Jimmy Wilde all hit considerably harder p4p for me. Robbo, the middleweight, also hits less hard then robbo the Welter
IMPOSSIBLE to know, and outside the Top 10 Greatest (which is also IMPOSSIBLE), these lists are more & more rediculous' as I've always said, you can single out who we believe to be the elite, and the rest are "Among the Greatest", thats honestly the closest we'll ever get to knowing forsure!!!
Gene Fullmer had an iron chin by Middleweight standards, proven both before and after the fights with Robinson. Ray flattened him with one punch. That was 13 pounds above his natural weight, years past his prime. I definitely think Robinson was one of the greatest punchers of all time.
I think the problem with trying to get a line on this is there are great defensive boxers who rarely took heavy shots flush.eg Graham, Maxim, Toney. How much is down to durability ,and how much down to a tight defence? Then there are guys who lacked a top class significant defence , and still stood erect.eg Antuofermo, McCullough, McCall, Chuvalo,Cobb,Jeffries,Lamotta. You can say well the ones that were hit on by appreciably smaller guys can be weeded out,[Jeffries]and shuffle the pack to your own preference. McCullough.is in there, imo, Lamotta, Chuvalo, Cobb and McCall. Grimm was dropped multiple times he doesnt belong. Two guys who are worth consideration, Greb, and Dillon.
Ray Robinson Kid Gavalin Chuvalo McCall Cobb Greb Monzon Hagler Jeffries LaMotta Gorilla Jones Holyfield
Ray Robinson was a defensive fighter who got knocked down many times. No way you can compare him to Marvin Hagler.
You're perfectly right. The guys who actually took punches and stayed on their feet are the ones with iron chins. Hopkins and Floyd might have glass jaws for all we know. We just don't know because they don't get hit.
Willie Pep was a defensive master who got KNOCKED OUT as well as was decked..he was still a defensive master. Even more impressive was Nicolino Locche who was never really knocked out, just stopped on cuts and was...in his 100 + fights, rarely even decked.
I wouldn't call it many times but he did got knocked out once , 4 long , by Artie Levine . He had a good chin for his type of fighters (Hearns , Williams , etc but not top 10 all time 4 all types)
