I am basing that on the Tony Bellew fight. Usyk had major trouble with the slickness and tricks of Bellew. Wasn't Bellew up on the cards? Toney is better at that and won't get KOD.
Well, he didn't really have trouble with those things. He ate the odd straight right counter, and took a few rounds to figure him out, but took over fairly easily. In Usyk's fights with basically everyone except Gassiev, he takes a few rounds off to feel his man out, and he did the same with Bellew. Once he got into the grove of things, it was only a matter of time. And yeah, he was up, unfairly so IMO. I had him winning no more than three rounds, two IIRC. Toney's problems with Reggie and Nunn, is pretty damning here as Toney's legs were awful above 160. The added weight meant he just couldn't chase someone down. Usyk would just make Toney lead IMO. Not much more to it than that.
To be honest I think everyone just got very carried away, Bellew included. Bellew resorted to throwing 1 punch at a time from about round 3 onwards. Uysk started very slow because he knew Bellew would go at him early and exert all his energy, even as a Brit cheering for Bellew I thought it was a pretty dominate win. Maybe I’m not giving Bellew enough credit though.
Just picture Toney there instead of Bellew. So surely that is a fight Toney can win. It is a matter of styles and Bellew's style is the one that most closely resembles Toney's one of all the styles Usyk fought. Surely Toney is a different caliber of fighter than Bellew. On the other two points, I disagree a little bit. I myself had Bellew up by 1 point. Anyway, this was a close fight. Also, Toney has an excellent track record against elite southpaws. More generally, I think that Usyk has become a bit overrated. Surely he is a very good maybe even great cruiserweight. But just because he unified the division, does not mean he is as good as Holyfield. Evander is without question the better fighter, especially after seeing Usyk's 2 outings as a heavyweight.
Toney would make Usyk look bad. He is slicker, a better counter puncher and has better hand speed than Bellew. Usyk - Toney would have been an interesting quite even fight in my opinion
Usyk fought better competition while Evander slaughtered the division. Pretty close for me at the CW division.
Holyfield Usyk Haye Toney Gomez Qawi Jomes Cunningham Briedris Lebedev Adamek Gassiev Jirov De Leon Norris
Usyk never beat anybody like Quawi. Anyway, I was rather referring to their ability. I think Evander is clearly the better fighter
Okay, I picture Toney in there. He's landing counters, he's throwing more and more as Usyk looks to get near him then Usyk keeps him at arm's length and doesn't let Toney do anything about it. There's a reason Toney didn't fight Byrd. Is he? I'd have said the head-movement and lead right of Hunter was more similar to Toney, but neither actually fight anything like him. Anyway, if you look at styles, then I just can't see how you can look past the things that Jirov, Nunn and Reggie used to give Toney issues. And they were real issues, not winning the odd round or two like Bellew did, Toney almost lost all of these fights. Like Nunn, Usyk has a height and reach advantage with quicker feet. Like Reggie, he has the immaculate fundamentals and cagey defence on the back foot. And like Jirov, he has a huge, unwavering workrate. Across all of the weights JT fought at, I literally cannot think of a fighter with more of a style made to beat him. Do you think? I actually think Southpaws are awful for Toney, but he was great enough to pull out the win. I just don't think he can do it here, against a guy who, as I described above, is awful for him, and would out-weigh him massively. He's also much tougher and smarter than Jirov, and wouldn't be old like Holyfield. I don't think there's anybody you could say, who isn't named Evander, that you could have above Usyk. Not after seeing all of those guys who he's beaten and who they've beaten. The guy's résumé is insane, and he's passed every test thrown at him with flying colours. While people may overrate him at heavyweight, he's right where he belongs at cruiserweight IMO.
