George Scrap Iron Johnson absolutely belongs on that list and if I played by the rules and named only 10 he should be on there! Thanks!
1.Holyfield 2.Lewis 3.Holmes 4.Tyson 5.Foreman 6.Wlad 7.AJ 8.Frazier 9.Fury 10.Patterson(if he counts)
Well i don't really hold that many overly close. After 8 i was stumped and i'd even stretched a bit with two in the 8. He was shocking in interviews and the like back in the day but away from the spotlight (when he'd let his guard down) he was totally different and a really fine guy from all accounts. Get him in the media scrums and he was totally classless a lot of the time and this fed the media and things just compounded. You have to know how to play the media game and these days most athletes from all walks are coached to the eyeballs on this front. He just didn't know any better at the time imo and having that complex and chip on his shoulder probably inspired him to become the great fighter long term fighter he was. He worked hard to get where he did and truly believed most everything was against him (which was true with some things) and he certainly wore that. You have to admire his tenacity, perseverance and dedication. He had oodles of guts and heart in the ring too.
In order 1-..Dave Zyglewicz (Answerd the Bell vs "Smokin Joe" Frazier) 2-..Jean Pierre Coopmans (Took Ali 5 rounds, never received a rematch) 3-..Alfredo Evangelista (carried Ali 15 rounds) 4-.."Scrap Iron" Johnson (Perennial trial horse) 5-.."Hurricane" Peter McNeeley (took Mike Tyson 1:29) 6-..Mel Turnbow (Ali sparring partner) 7-..Lou Bailey (veteran trail HORSE) 8-..Joe "King" Roman (took Foreman 2:00, barked at him at instructions) 9-..Claude "Humphrey" McBride (Oklahoma State Heavyweight Champion) 10.Terry Hinke (the "Portland Puncher" Lost by KO to the "Real Rocky") I just heard something I was a little miffed about, Foreman made $17, 500 defeating Chuvalo. George made $500,000 defeating Eliis on his comeback, Ellis made $325,000.
And let's not forget that Claude Humphrey McBride fought Buster Mathis for the world super-heavyweight title!
