I don't think Floyd Patterson had a suspect chin.

There wasn't any suspicion about it. He had a glass jaw.

 

I'll second Michael Moorer...his chin was plenty suspect.

I read quite a bit about Benny and Arcel said he was so exceptional despite actually being weaker than most of his opponents in strength and ability to take punishment .. he had to be near perfect and he was ..

The whole suspect chin thing is relative anyway.
A knockdown can be caused by so many factors.
The fact is that if a full fit HW lands a punch in the right place in the right circumstances it can knock a guy down.Lennoxs 2 career knockdowns are testament to that.Doesnt make him suspect though.
Frank Bruno was great offensively but never learned how to survive when he got tired and got tagged,but that in my book didnt mean he had a suspect chin etc.
Michael Moorer going down from Foremans perfectly planted right hand in my book doesnt make him glass jawed when he has taken many other shots and stood up.
This is the kind of thread that produces comments in ignorance from people who have only experienced boxing from the TV set and their sofa.

Exactly, if all those fighters mentioned had glass chins they sure as hell wouldn't have achieved half the success they did.

Like i say it's all relative.
We all have bad days,bad moments in our lives,but they don't define us.
For a boxer a bad moment seems to be magnified.
Glass jawed etc is an over used phrase.
A boxer who couldnt take a good hit would never rise in prominence to the level that we had ever even heard of them.
(I understand the thread question but am just making a wider point).

 

the above two posts are of course true.

fighters often get faulted and over scrutinized unfairly, inaccurately and ridiculously at times. allowances aren't always considered or known even for some surprise defeats or poor performances. they can be as simple as off nights, not fully well or healed and of course taking a step too far against higher weights.

but it is also true there are fighters like Amir Khan, whom great a Boxer, athlete that he is, he is also a death trap waiting to happen even among his own weight class... same with Tyson Fury as well.

 

Thistle....you are right and funnily enough i think you have picked 2 good examples.However i dont think its due to the 'glass chin' scenario...its more to do with a host of other things.Sometimes just getting to a level where they have exceeded their ability.

Come on Mc ... in how many fights, against fighters hw far out of his natural weight class. How many times after he was blind in one eye ? Langford had an all time great chin .. how many times would LaMotta been down if he fought half his career against heavyweights ?
