fighters "enhanced their reputation" by fighting other Top & Noted fighters, winning, drawing and even in defeat depending on just who their opponent might have been.

even in the early days of actual recorded regular ratings, these ratings weren't taken very serious and jumping ahead a few years later again when they were more excepted, not only were they often heavily disputed, but they were/are also IMPOSSIBLE records of 'trying' to determine 10 top men out of literally dozens & hundreds even, in just one of the weight divisions world wide...

Ratings are still disputed to this very day and there has been plenty of lists made with 'influence & gain' on behalf of fighters, managers, promoters and now whole Sanctioning bodies.

these facts have not only been documented, but I believe even tried in Courts of Law.

Ratings are a guide, a are good measure, be on that they often fall short of dozens of competitors Globally.
