    Seamus,

Yes. Peter Jackson is one of many Fitzsimmons could have fought(others frank childs, denver ed martin, joe butler, etc)...I think fitzsimmons missing out on peter jackson is a blemish.

Once again, I commented of my opinion of his style on film and how it would not be able to cope with a modern athlete like david haye...what is your retort for that?

Yes, I am well and truly sold on Haye as a puncher and finisher.

For the time being though, I think it would be smart to keep your cards close to your chest in terms of his final standing.

Then we have different interpretations of the phrase "head to head"

I'm saying if fitz was to be matched against david haye in a fight, i'd have no hesitation picking haye to win.

Sure he achieved less but based on the skills on display i'd put my money on haye.

One thing that could be said in Fitzsimmons defence (and Jeffries to some extent), is the fact that the period when Fitzsimmons held the title, was probably the lowest points in the coloured heavyweight divisions history.

Really ? Pretty serious opinion of David. How would he do against Louis, Frazier or a 1991 Holyfield ?

He would lose to all of them. Haye is very good, but he is not an all time great like those men above. I think Haye would pose problems to Holyfield for quite some time before holy grinds him down for the knockout. Haye is a sharpshooter. He couldn't keep up with holy's combination punching and workrate for 15 though.

I agree those talents like rocky, louis, frazier should all beat haye.

But guys like fitz, corbett, willard, carnera, sharkey and some of the light heavyweight's i'd definitely favour haye to defeat.

Jack Johnson called Fitz the best of the heavyweights.

If Billy Conn makes your list, I think Tommy Loughran should.
Wins over nearly 50 heavyweights including victories over .
    Godoy
    Charles
    Griffiths
    Baer
    Sharkey
    Uzcudun
    Levinsky
    Renault
    Hamas
    Schaaf
Stack up pretty well against most other sub 190 pounders.
    His record certainly eclipses Conn's

Not quite the same scale of schooling but fair enough.

No ****. But at HW it was all about finding a way to land that ungodly punch. Once he was above MW & LHW his range was less of an asset, and he was far more of a minimalist in terms of his approach. Like I said, Fitzie was a white, poor man's Archie Moore.
