And what a multitude we have to choose from in that Golden Decade for the big fellas. Inspired by a suggestion from Turpinr. Some I'm sure you'll agree with while others may make you scratch your heads - such is the beauty of debate. Here goes. Winner's name first. 1/ Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali 1971 2/ Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier 1975 3/ Muhammad Ali-George Foreman 1974 4/ Larry Holmes-Ken Norton 1978 5/ George Foreman-Ron Lyle 1976 6/ Muhammad Ali- Ken Norton 1973 (Second fight) 7/ Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier 1974 8/ Joe Frazier-Joe Bugner 1973 9/ Jerry Quarry-Earnie Shavers 1973 10/ Ron Lyle-Earnie Shavers 1975
Larry Holmes vs Ken Norton Joe Frazier vs Muhammad Ali 1 Joe Frazier vs Muhammad Ali 3 Larry Holmes vs Mike Weaver 1 Earnie Shavers vs Ron Lyle Muhammad Ali vs Ken Norton 2 George Foreman vs Ron Lyle Joe Frazier vs Joe Bugner Larry Holmes vs Earnie Shavers 2 Earnie Shavers vs Roy Tiger Williams This list is not in order BTW and also i know fights like Foreman vs Ali had more historical impact, but i'm just listing the fights i personally enjoyed the most.
Oh yeah all of those. Not forgetting Fraziers 2 goes with the teak tough Jerry Quarry. Joe Frazier vs Ron Stander Earnie Shavers vs Jimmy Ellis
I believe Frazier vs Quarry 1 was in 1969 in which it won FOTY, i would of listed it but unfortunately 1 year difference.
Another fight which i enjoyed was Frazier's 2 fights with Bonavena, unfortunately i've only seen highlights of Frazier vs Bonavena 2. But it was interesting to see Frazier go the distance with someone other than Muhammad Ali.
Frazier was nearly stopped by Bonavena too. Another knock down and the 3 knock down rule would have been applied.
Frazier looked really good in that second fight with Quarry. Used his right hand a lot too. If their first fight had been in the 70s as opposed to 1969 I'd have featured that one also.
Holmes-Weaver is just one helluva scrap all the way around, and with dramatic turns as you mentioned. That uppercut …
Good list, but Young-Foreman was arguably better than Ali-Frazier 2 Jerry Quarry-Joe Alexander wasn't nearly as significant as the others on your list, but it turned out to be a good scrap. Alexander was only 8-3 going into the fight. He dropped Quarry hard in the first, only to be taken out himself in the second. Fun fight.
Very nice list. Off the top of my head, I know 5 of those fights had a place in the Top 50 on the Must Watch Boxing Survey, and I'm fairly certain all 5 were on the upper half. When I have a chance, I'll take a look when I have some free time.
