The O Brien result was not a draw it was a no decision but you will repeat the same tired old crap later. Just as you will ignore the fact that the champion broke his arm against Jim Johnson. Just as you will repeat the bull**** that Gunboat Smith tko'd Johnson, even though it was a spar! Just carry on ,you only damage yourself, and God knows ,you certainly are damaged!lol
Why do you bother replying? You know nothing except to regulate passages from other people's work. This has been proven. Johnson had 40+ pounds on O'Brien. That's good enough for me, and so is the weight estimate of 160. Now if you want to tell us why O'Brien who was past his best and out weighted by 40 pounds, give or take a few and with no punch did so well vs. a prime Jack Johnson, I'm all ears. And then tell us why other fighters who also had good jabs and hit harder that were bigger could not duplicate the same type of success. We are talking about a champion who was hurt by Ross of all people, floored by Ketchel, and according to ringside primary people, might have been running out of steam vs Flynn. I post to educate others who want to read, and sometimes to laugh at your replies. And yes you do care. Stop lying Tony. If you did not care you would not reply. DUH.
Same Sh*t Different Day . Pass! Jim Jeffries in Chicago , learning the result said,"The result of the fight is no surprise to me,though I expected Johnson would do better.O Brien is a flashy man in a six round fight and would keep almost anyone off for that length of time." Hard to argue with your vanilla idol isn't it?lol
Nobody prior to Joe Louis' era makes top 10 so that narrow's it down quite a bit for me. My top 10 looks something like this, and not necessarily in order. - Ali - Louis - Holmes - Marciano - Lewis - Foreman - Tyson - Frazier - Klitschko - Holyfield
Thanks. I didn't number any of those names as I can't always decide which order to place them in. Muhammad Ali being #1 and Joe Louis being #2 are the only consistent ratings I ever have. But I don't rank anyone prior to Joe Louis's time in any heavyweight top 10.
I don't think that's actually the topic Mr M.He is asking for the top ten fighters for that specific decade 1905-1915. "Top 10 HW fighters from 1905-1915" "What's your rankings for this decade?"
These are primary news paper reports from the day after the O Brien fight, posted by reporters who were ringside. Regarding the condition of Johnson for the OBrien fight. " Johnson gave his weight as 205/206lbs but most thought he weighed a lot more.He unquestionably was carrying too much weight". "Members of the press that were on hand agreed that O Brien was by far the better trained of the two.He had trained hard and consistently and looked good.Conversely Johnson appeared to have accepted too many invitations to banquets to be in the best of shape.Since his return from Australia theatrical work had taken up most of his time and he had ben living an easy life.He was terribly fat on leaving New York and it would take a good two months to get it off.Two weeks work is only a start when a man is fat and out of shape." "Johnson was overweight, soft, and blew like a porpoise when boxing with his sparring partners." Regarding the actual fight. Johnson floored O Brien in the first round which the Philadelphia Inquirer, The World and the Evening Bulletin gave to Johnson. The second round, the Inquirer and the World gave it as an even round. The Public Ledger and The Press gave it to OBrien. The third round. The Public Ledger,The Inquirer and The Press gave it an even round. Johnson was described as "puffing like an overworked engine". The fourth round. Johnson floored O Brien. The Inquirer,The World and The Journal gave it to Johnson. The Press and The Public Ledger gave it even. The fifth round. O Brien was down again, O Brien was bleeding heavily from his left eye which was now closed. TheWorld,TheInquirer,ThePublic Ledger ,and the Journal all gave the round to Johnson. The Press said it was an even round. The 6th round.OBrien was clinching here until the referee had to tear him away. The World,The Inquirer,TheJournal and even The Press gave the round to Johnson. The Philadelphia Public Ledger gave it to O Brien. The Ledger,The Press,The Bulletin called it a draw. The Inquirer,The Record,The World, and The Journal all made Johnson the winner! Sorry Dozy you failed again!lol You're right the Ross fight was very close! "Johnson sent Ross down for a count of nine in the first round. Ross went down again in the third for a count of eight. In the fourth round, Ross landed his only telling blow of the fight, a vicious right hand that shook Johnson. Johnson battered Ross over the last two rounds". The clue is in the phrase"his only telling blow".lol ps . The idea of you "educating someone is an oxymoron! Thanks for the entertainment!
Oh, you left out a few things. Johnson had blood in his mouth from the soft punching O'Brien, and like I said several local and primary felt O'Brien was the better. I can list them just as well. Wait, Are you calling Johnson a liar on the weight he gave? I NEVER said the Ross fight was close. LIAR. Show me where I said that! Your credibility sinks even lower... I said many times Ross was a joke of a title pick, however, and read this carefully: Ross, who hardly landed anything landed a blow, that shook Johnson! This content is protected Ross, who hardly landed anything landed a blow, that shook Johnson! Nothing like a heavyweight champion in his prime, fighting a guy with his lineal title on the line who had 5 losses, a win, and a draw in his last 7 fights getting a title shot, then hurting the champion. AHAHAHAHAHA! Ross, 5'9" tall was 11 and 6 with 2 draws and 4 KO losses already coming into this fight.
OMG blood in his mouth! You would think he had been in a fight! lol Ross landed a blow that shook Johnson ?WOW !Hold the front page! How many rounds did Ross win? Does NONE sound about right to you? Q Was Ross who had beaten Schreck and Gardner and drawn with Barry ,a worse challenger than John Finnegan who had 11 fights up till then winning just 4, and had been massacred in his last fight by Ruhlin. Ross went on to beat,Ferguson,Moran,Flynn,Kubiak,Jack Twin Sullivan, and draw with Jeannette. Finnegan had beaten no one before he fought Jeffries, his wins were over fighters with the following records. 2-0-1 9-13-1 5-3-0 5-2-0 0-0-0 He had 2 fights after Jeffries defended against him ,winning one and drawing the other, he never beat anyone worth mentioning. This is how he was thought of at the time. Finnegan alias "The Pittsburg Punching Bag" was considered at best a third rater by experts of the day. Pot Kettle?lol
Ross should not have lasted the distance. He sucked. he was 5 losses, a win, and a draw in his last 7 fights. Worse than anyone I've ever seen getting a title shot in his past 7 fights and already KO'd a few times before. And he hurt Johnson?!. How embarrassing, and he did it with likely the only solid shot he landed, which makes one question Johnson's chin when hit. Finnegan lasted 55 seconds in his title fight. He didn't belong either ( See how honest I am, not Pot calling the kettle here ) , but he was 4-2 with 4 draws, not quite as bad as Ross leading up to the fight. When a class champion meets a 2nd or 3rd rate, he should blow him out, not get hurt by him. Jef I continue to see suspect results for Johnson as champion. TKO'd by a green Gunboat Smith in a 4 round EX match! Rocked by a terrible Ross! Outboxed according to primary sources to a 160ish pound man in a 6 round affair by O'Brien Floored by a super middle in Ketchel, who I have read was 158 pounds for the fight! Drew with a Journeyman, who would have likely would have finished him if the fight was longer than 10 rounds All-time great stuff with a hint of sarcasm. You'll never get it. No one person in anyone All time top ten would have results like this. Moreover, that person would crush this lowly opposition.
