#10. Joe Frazier #09. James Toney #08. Jung Koo Chang #07. Rocky Marciano #06. Julio Cesar Chavez #05. Ruben Olivares #04. Sandy Saddler #03. Ezzard Charles #02. Henry Armstrong #01. Roberto Duran I feel like some guys were short changed, guys like Whitaker, Qawi, Napoles or Ambers. Consider these honourable mentions. Too many for ten, I guess. Re; Greb/Other Fighters without footage - the reason is right there. No footage, and/or next to no footage of them. I have the word of dozens of writers who saw them sure, but have you ever read the word of writers who write about boxing in papers/articles now? Most are far from accurate. I'm just sticking with my own eyes, here.
Nice list George. I think it really highlights both the timelessness and the universal importance of good infighting in professional boxing.
Yes, cool list. A couple of other possible mentions: - Though not entirely in his comfort zone, but Louis could peel off some nice inside work - see the Godoy rematch for perhaps the best example of same. Then there is the old Mauler, Jack Dempsey who did some very nice up close and personal fighting.
I have a question about how you’re doing this. Is being the best inside fighter at HW (potentially Frazier?) worth more then being the 3rd best infighter at 147lbs despite them being far superior technically? Hope I make sense.
Sweet list. Let's push it out toward 20 nominee's and explore the likes of LaMotta, Zivic and Fullmer.
I put far less thought into it that wrapping my head around things like that. It felt wrong to put a guy like say - Jeff Fenech - over Joe Frazier, and so I didn't. Are you referring to Griffith by any chance?
I think I'd have Tiger before those guys, specifically at middle. That's an interesting debate, though. I briefly considered Zivic, but I tentatively left him off the honourable mentions in place of Lou Ambers. I suppose the next ten I'd have would be some mix of: Whitaker, Ambers, Qawi, Tiger, LaMotta, Fullmer, Zivic, Hagler, Fenech and Napoles.
There's a lot of wheat isn't there. The good thing is after you get down the list a bit it's hard for anyone to overly argue any positions. I remember Wilfredo Gomez doing some awesome offensive work in close too. Sooooo many.
It’s almost inevitable given his height, reach and his capabilities from distance that he’s inside work gets thought of after those things, but yep he could definitely fight inside too.
D’oh! I must have skipped over him in the original list. I thought it was weird that no-one was mentioning him!
Great list. I think Jeff Fenech, Bernard Hopkins, Mike McCallum, Roman González, Riddick Bowe, Andre Ward, and Jake LaMotta are also up there as some of the best infighters as well
