Now someone is going to make a "Which era of heavyweights had the better inside fighting skills? The 50s or the 80s." The blood is on your hands.
Hagler banged Duran around on the inside when they fought, it's just I've never seen Mayweather actually fight on the inside he always slips out and avoids it, when were Mayweather and Canelo ever forehead to forehead or ear to ear banging body shots and uppercuts or "swimming" looking for over or under arm control trying to open up each other's guard, those guys never fight on the inside, they fight at midrange and clinch when they get close and then get separated by the ref This content is protected
Duran was truly great at infighting - and some have compared Roberto’s overall style to that of Dempsey, including in regards to infighting, but in respect of that particular attribute, I guess Duran would naturally get the nod over Dempsey when viewed in P4P terms.
this one was posted awhile back by greynotsoold, great example of in-fighting. Dupas - Scott This content is protected another one I like. Carter - Benton This content is protected Other fighters I've seen that I like on the inside are Andre Ward, Evander Holyfield, J.C. Chavez, Mike McCallum, Duran (when he was in shape), Beterbiev, Povetkin... to name a few.
A good example of Mayweather’s infighting is the Jesus Chavez fight. Mayweather also put Hatton away with a checkhook and had a counter right hand that rivaled James Toney’s. I also remember him taking Judah to the body.
Yeah I was thinking about it th is afternoon but I am travelling my dude and can’t type like that on this phone. I might get back to you in September!
No man got so savagely banged out on the inside as Frazer did against Foreman. He wouldn't make my list out of the HWs. Bowe , Fury , Hola would
For me: Toney, Qawi, Bowe, Holyfield, Ward, Hopkins, Armstrong, Chavez, Duran, Jack Johnson. I don't dislike Floyd mentions at all, he was nasty on the inside and beat the hell out of a lot of good fighters at all 3 distances. Fury is nice on the inside as well, I think Frazier was mostly a midrange bomber with a lot of his best punches coming at midrange, in between stifling bodywork and distance control. I think he got inside to prevent his opponents from throwing, use his physicality, then bomb them out during an exchange as they wanted to prevent him going through the gates again. I've recently brushed up on Benny Briscoe and he was a hell of a fighter on the inside who gave Hagler and Monzon both headaches. When Dick Tiger got his hands moving at short range he would rip the body and the head nicely as well, but could also swing at range.
