Top 10 lightweights from 1980 to presently

Mosley's resume at lightweight is very thin if you ask me...Sure he looked awesome against weak opposition but really his best opponents pushed him pretty hard. And they werent even that good.

 

I don't rate Mosley's resume that high at LW........although the Holliday win was good.

Time for my regular rant in this type of thread, here goes.

I believe we are about to see some underrating of Jose Luis Castillo.

I just went for people who done more at the weight, but some guys are clearly rated below guys they would whup in my list.

Good List Teeto. Couldnt find room for Edwin Rosario? Also Why is Cassamayor and Castillo on there but not corrales? Corrales BEAT cassamayor then was blantatly robbed in the 3rd fight, knocked out Castillo at 135lb, and knocked out an undefeated acelino freitas. As far as im concered corrales accomplished more than the rest of em.

Brief as it was Chavez was at his absolute best @135. Arguello although still very talented, by 1980 was nearing the end. Mayweather dominate, but questionable decision over Castillo tarnished his standing a bit. Picking Chavez over Whitaker was tough. common opponent Ramirez. Whitaker split with Ramirez(Although unfairly). Chavez however dominated Ramirez in thier Lightweight unification match.

 

Chavez beat Ramirez on a cut, though he was clearly ahead at the time. Pea dominated him in two fights (including the first), the second being a shut-out and a masterclass for the ages.

When you factor in that Chavez only fought 4 times at LW (his notable wins being Rosario and the aforementioned Ramirez) while Whitaker fought the majority of his career there, unified the belts, and dominated all comers, the case for Chavez goes from slim to none.

 

Whitaker never took on Camacho or Rosario in the late 1980s, clearly two of the best lightweights of the 80s next to chavez....I think this would have told us alot about whitaker. Chavez on the otherhand took apart the hall of fame rosario in masterclass fashion, and then was the first to uncontroversially beat Camacho, and he did so with ease. Camacho and Rosario in there primes were terrific fighters, fighters whitaker never beat at 135lb, but chavez did in there primes.

 

How could Castillo and Casamayor rate above corrales? Corrales clearly got the better of the trilogy with casamayor despite the horrendous judges in the 3rd fight. Castillo lost the only fight between him and corrales at 135lb, by STOPPAGE. Also corrales was the first to beat the highly rated acelino freitas, a man who beat CASAMAYOR!
