1 Ruben Olivares 2 Julio Cesar Chavez 3 Vicente Saldivar 4 Salvador Sanchez 5 Carlos Zarate 6 Miguel Canto 7 Juan Manuel Marquez 8 Marco Antonio Barrera 9 Ricardo Lopez 10 Eric Morales
Excluding active fighters (Canelo may well end up sneaking on the bottom half of this list, somewhere): 1. JCC, my #4p4p in the 80's & #8 p4p in the 90's 2. Olivares, my #2 all time BW & #5 p4p in the 60's 3. Canto, my #2 all time Fly & #4 p4p in the 70's 4. Saldivar, my #3 all time FW & #4p4p in the 60's 5. Sanchez, my #5 all time FW & #6p4p in the 80's 6. Zarate, my #4 all time BW & #10 p4p in the 70's 7. JMM, my #4 p4p in the 00's 8. Barrera, my #6 p4p in the 00's 9. Morrales, my #8 p4p in the 00's and #19 in the 90's 10. Lopez, my #9 p4p in the 90's
Chavez Olivares Sanchez Saldivar Marquez Lopez Barrera Morales Canto Zarate Baby Arizmendi Raton Macias doesn’t make the list but his star status was bigger than many of these. Remember that Jose Napoles considered himself mexican. I consider JL Castillo a great fighter. My forgotten honorable mentions go to Juan Zurita, Kid Azteca, Joe Conde and Ricardo Pajarito Moreno
Alot of people seem to rate Zarate highly but i've always thought he's a tad overrated personally, but maybe i'm being too harsh on him or i'm not knowledgeable enough on his achievements.
Miguel Canto a little low in these rankings, though the Fly's always suffer in such lists as the least high profile divison. Small even for a fly at 5-foot even, he went 49-1-1 at Fly during his prime, his only lost vs Betulio Gonzalez, an ATG Fly himself, was avenged twice. 15-1-1 in lineal world Fly title fights is, I think, only bettered by Wonjongkam, but by then the proliferation of alphabet titles rendered "lineal" status virtually meaningless. Certainly Wonjongkam's win resume doesn't compare to Canto's, which aside from Gonzalez x 2, included Oguma x 2, Bernal and Espinal x 2. Not household names today, but they were all seriously good fighters.
Not at all DP, a lot of people feel like you. If your sole or primary criteria is compare "names" on win resume, Zarate ranks a lot lower than I have him. Dominance scores highly in my own criteria, which is way I have Carlos so high. 63 of his 66 career wins at all weights were by KO, which is crazy for the lower weights. He was a BW at his best & record there was 51-1, but I think he beat Pintor, which would have had him 52-0 at his best weight, you can't do much better than that, even if he doesn't have the names of some other ATG BWs on his win ledger.
Same ten as mine Greg.Going with the theme of the old Eric Morecambe gag,all the right names not necessarily in the right order
