Recency bias plays a huge role in shaping some of people's rankings while other people are influenced by nostalgia.

How do you think Jose Becerra or Rudolfo Martinez compare to Barrera and Morales?

Incidently, I really think Marquez put himself over the other two with his late career surge. And Erik Morales is my all time favorite fighter.

I would put Cuevas over Marquez. Marquez is being way overrated.

    That’s insane.

On the basis that you personally feel Marquez is overrated?

Cuevas isn’t remotely close to Marquez’ level based on talent, technical skill and a million miles away on career achievement.

Saldivar gets overlooked even in Mexico. A lot of people in Mexico really disliked Olivares because of his lifestyle and what was seen as a lack of respect. Same for the likes of Tolucco Lopez so you’d think Saldivar having the cleanest lifestyle and humility would be an icon but he wasn’t. He was seen as too intraverted and became a recluse in retirement not even following or watching boxing, basically went into hiding until his death. Turns out he saved a lot of money and his kids grew up well because of it.

Maybe retiring right in the middle of his prime hurt his standing a lot?

In Mexico it’s universal that Marquez is by far and away the #1 fighter post-Chavez. That’s among casual and hardcore fans.

That must eat away at Barrera given he hated to share the stage with other Mexican fighters and especially took a disliking to Marquez. I remember after Marquez came on a TV show after the Pacquaio KO and as Marquez came out every fighter hugged Marquez. Chavez, Lopez, some others and Barrera could only muster a hand shake and to look away. Weak.

I love Barrera. But there are a lot stories about him just like this. I believe Morales when he said the guys a mother****er plain and simple. And those cheap shots he landed on Kennedy McKinney at press conference tells you a lot. Excellent fighter inside the ring

He was great but definately he was a hater. He couldn’t stand Morales because he challenged his spotlight. He started to really dislike Marquez because they are almost from the same part of Mexico City and Marquez beat him and Golden Boy gave Marquez attention so he got upset.

The disdain intensified when Marquez got bigger than he ever was and also did so much better against Pacquaio. Like I said he could barely offer congratulations, looked devastated when the KO happened and I even remember him not even shaking Marquez’ hand at the Mayweather-Hatton weigh-in when they paraded all the fighters.

Marquez is a classy guy. Very humble and supportive of all boxers l especially Mexicans so a bit of a weird one. I was told Marquez when asked about Barrera’s apparent disdain of him he just said “F*ck him. I never gave me any credit for beating him”.

Gonzalez was excellent but his chin let him down. Tremendous fighter though. Arce? Fun to watch but not in the same league as most of the guys already mentioned.
