I agree with anyone who says JMM is the best of the recent generation of Mexican fighters (i.e. Post-Chavez). Barrera and Morales were both wonderful but Marquez deserves the top spot in that list. Saldivar? Had he kept going between 68 and 70, he'd probably be a contender for no. 1. But he did enough between 64 and 67 to make anybody's top 10 (probably top 5 too) Like has already been said, he's a guy who still flies under the radar, even for Mexicans. I remember when I first met a Mexican friend of mine and found out he was a boxing fan I started mentioning Mexican fighters - Chavez obviously, Sal Sanchez, Olivares, etc and he looked delighted that this British kid would even have heard of Mexican boxers. Then I said the name Vincente Saldivar and he looked blank. So just on that basis, I'd say he's underrated in Mexico!
Still putting my list together and debating placement but the one thing I'm sure of is 1 and 2 - Chavez and Olivares. I actually think there's a bit of gap between those two and the rest. There's arguments for no. 3 for a host of fighters. Currently I have Saldivar with Sanchez a very short distance behind him. Saldivar should be automatically in anyone's top 10 for fighters of the 60s, all time featherweights and all time Mexican fighters. No doubt he'll get his dues over time and ultimately be one of those fighters who's "so underrated he's now overrated". Just doing my bit to accelerate the process! One thought I had on why he might be underrated (apart from not being an extrovert like Olivares was) is that he fought before the great generation of Mexican fighters of the 70s so he's generally ommited through lack of association. People just forget to include him because of it.
Chiquita is top 20 perhaps/probably top 15. Arce is nowhere. I’d say Jose Luis Castillo is one of the most underrated and certainly worthy of a mention as top 20. Far better than the likes of Cuevas for example. Wins over Johnston, Casamayor, Corrales and Mayweather (yes he won the first) are superb.
What we have to consider when weighing up JMM to other Mexican greats is that they didn’t have Memo in their camp for some of their defining fights.
I agree with most lists, but I think Raúl Macias has good potential to be there, he's pretty underrated but was a great fighter.
Thanks for posting my list as well as yours! Actually, I have Morales slightly higher and Lopez slightly lower but ither than that, yep, it's the same.
