My opinion: 1. Harry Greb 2. Billy Conn 3. Charley Burley 4. Wee Willie Davies 5. Teddy Yarosz 6. Frank Klaus 7. Jackie Wilson 8. Sammy Angott 9. Fritzie Zivic 10. Billy Soose Honorable mentions: Jack McClelland, Cuddy DeMarco, Tommy Yarosz, Patsy Brannigan, Jack Zivic, Johnny Ray, Mose Butch
Some ****ing line up isn't it? There are a couple of guys I would swap on your list, but only literally by one place, so nothing to bleat about. That's aside from Zivic who is far to low for me. I would place him at #4, personally.
A strong list although in my ignorance, I'm not familiar with Davies. Just looked him up ,close fights with Wolgast ,and wins over Genaro and Shwartz cement his claim, busy little guy wasn't he.
Mmmm....ahead of Yarosz and Wee Willie? Take a close look at those records, Matt Yarosz and Davies are hard for Zivic to top. They beat killer opposition and were much more consistent in doing so. And Klaus has a loftier record too, imo. I love Fritzie, though. One of my favorite fighters. An H2H nightmare for any welter in history.
Yeah, above those guys. Zivic fought everybody. Everybody. He fought a who's who of boxing golden age. I think the highest level of competition ever, give or take. He's got a fair share of losses, sure. And Armstrong. He's got Armstrong. He beat arguably the best fighter ever. Ever.
Yup, he clobbered Genaro and Tony wouldn't come near him or be induced to give Willie a title shot for anything. Willie has one win over Wolgast, but Midget ultimately proved to be superior. But Wee Willie also topped flyweight champion Newsboy Brown (an excellent fighter who called Willie "the fastest fighter I ever fought"), beat champion Schwartz several times as well as Ross Fields and Black Bill (a cousin of Kid Chocolate and an excellent contender) several times. He also topped bantamweight titlist Tony Marino, top contender Eugene Huat and lost a close one to champion Spider Pladner. All in all, a great career. Great wins, no doubt. But check out Yarosz vs world champions/titlists (and I won't even count the past prime versions of Tommy Freeman and Pete Latzo): 3 wins over Vince Dundee 2 wins over Ken Overlin A win over Billy Conn (and another that should have been awarded to him according to almost everyone who saw it) Archie Moore (young, but still a top fighter) Lou Brouillard Solly Krieger Babe Risko Ben Jeby Plus wins over the likes of Lloyd Marshall Al Gainer Nate Bolden and many others. Check out his consistency: http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=10519&cat=boxer Re: Davies. Though Armstrong may be the most glossy opponent on the compared resumes, Wee Wiilie Davies consistently beat by far the better opposition than Zivic. From where I sit anyway :smoke
Don't mistake me: Beast. But I don't think Zivic belongs at #9. Kid Azteka, Jake LaMotta (!), Henry Armstrong, Freddie Cochrane, Lew Jenkins, Izzy Jannazzo, Phil Furr, Bummy Davis, Sammy Angott, Charley Burley, Eddie Booker (!) and that life and death effort with Billy Conn. Dude doesn't belong at #9 on any list
Well done. Not much to add here. How about Pittsburgh vs. Philly? Philly's top ten: 1. Joe Frazier 2. Harold Johnson 3. Joey Giardello 4. Tommy Loughran 5. Bob Montgomery 6. Jeff Chandler 7. Matt Muhammad 8. Lew Tender 9. Bennie Briscoe 10. Midget Wolgast >>> I'll go with Pittsburgh here.
ONE guy certainly belongs on this list. Bob Montgomery was on a par with Ike williams and Beau Jack in his heyday, and though a lightweight who engaged in many wars, was considered a notch over Jackie Wilson or even the welterweight Fritzie Zivic...A great list though...
That's a formidable list of scalps, for sure. For what it's worth, here's long time Pittsburgh Press sportswriter Roy McHugh's list: 1. Greb 2. Conn 3. Burley 4. Yarosz 5. Soose 6. Zivic 7. Angott 8. Klaus 9. Wilson 10. Cuddy DeMarco
Im sure Frank Klauses Mgr, the highly esteemed George Engel, would take him over light hitting and erratic stamina Teddy Yarosz. I love em both!!
