Anybody got any info on exactly when P4P rankings came into existance? Boxrec carries the annual ring ratings begin with P4P in 1989, is this the first year any major publication or body had an annual (or monthly?) P4P rating system??? link: http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine's_Annual_Ratings Any links or info you can post would be of interest to me, in regards to who was thought of as the best fighters in the world regardless of weight class through the years...Any info would be appreciated! If not anyone who feels like taking a stab at a certain year/decade would also be of interest to me. Thanks
Hm, don“t know about lists but Ali mentioned SRR as the greatest boxer ever while he named himself the best hw ever. Which shows already that back then they made a difference there. I think I read also that SRR was in his time called a p4p fighter or p4p best fighter. So my guess it slowly started in the 40s/50s with rankings emerging in the 60s.
A fighter called P4P best - June 12, 1899 http://eastsideboxing.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1978679&postcount=5 Credit goes to Senya. P4P rankings - 1976: http://eastsideboxing.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1978679&postcount=5 Credit goes to MDWC.
Probbbly from the very begining of the sport. I have heard the term was used for Bob Fitzsimmons and Benny Leonard while they were active.
I'm guessing always I mean it'd have defined guys like fitz, langford and barbados who just didn't give a **** about how heavy the guy they fought was. I'm not sure how long it's been around as in separating guys like monzon and duran however.
P4p rankings of current fighters are pointless. I'm not sure why the magazines have them. I know throughout the 1980s, KO magazine and its sister publications had a top 12 pound-for-pound every month.
