He was beating the best contenders in the world, and the were either fighting to survive rather than to win, or getting anihilated early.

There wasn't a heavyweight in the world who could have stood up to him during this period or anything close to one.

You can only beat who there is to beat.

Jackson tackled Farnan in 1884, being beaten twice.. Why dismiss Jackson so quickly??

Herbert Slade was a manufactured fighter but he was managed by the same trainer and manager as Peter Jackson during this period.

If these guys thought that Jackso was ready to fight Sullivan then why didn't they put him forward as a challenger for Sullivan instead of Slade?

Because they knew that Sullivan was a bigger and harder hitting version of Farnan, and that Jackson simply wasn't reaqdy yet.

I like your play in words too Janitor.. "people he was fighting were the best that could be put in front of him.." meaning, Sullivan ventured no great distance to meet a genuine challenger to his title, nor did he have the balls to face any worthy opponent whilst in their own backyards and still claiming H/W domination. His prime may have been no longer than 3 years.. the truth to this we'll never know, due to reluctance to face the very best available to him.

I don't agree with your asertion that Sulliovan only defended against American challengers.

Between claiming the title after fighting Joe Goss and loosing it to Corbett, he fought 16 opponents in title fights who we know the birth place of (some multiple times e.g. Ryan, Mitchell, Greenfield Killrain).

Steve Taylor - Irish

Jack Dalton - American

Pady Ryan - Irish

Jimmy Elliot - Irish

Tug Wilson - British

Charlie Mitchell - British

Herbert Slade - New Zelander

John Lafflin - American

Alf Greenfield - British

Jack Burke - Irish

Dominick McCaffrey - American

Frank Herald - American

Patsy Cardiff - Canadian

Jake Killrain - American

Jim Corbett - American

That is 16 opponents of who only 6 were American. You have 8 from Britain and Ireland which were the other two big centres of pugilism, and one from Canada and New Zeland apeice.

I'd suggest Peter Jackson as a likely challenger by 1886 onwards, as well as Slavin and Goddard in the latter stages of Sullivans hogging of the Crown. Bill Farnan has obviously impressed with his handling of Jackson, and Tom Lees is another Aussie with powerful mitts.. Both readily available in 1884- 1885... This was Sullivans prime right??

Jackson only really came to prominance in America after John L Sullivan had shattered his left arm and effectivley become a one armed fighter.

After this Sullivan suffered a severe bout of fever which the doctors did not expect him to recover from. There could obviously be no question of him taking on a top challenger during this period. I think that the most that Jackson, Goddard or Slavin ever stood to gain was a win over an empty shell. Had they lost to him at this stage it would have been a fairly damning verdict upon them.

As for Farnan and Lees they were never really standout challengers, and I don't see either having much of a chance.

The era of American supremacy began prety much as the era of British supremacy ended.

If a country boasts most of the champions in most of the weight classes then you have to acknowledge its dominance.

The bottom line is that in his prime Sullivan could have whipped any two heavyweights in the world in the same night.

I would suggest that it essentialy started when the authaurities in Britain staqrted to crack down on prizefighting in the 1860s. After that the focus of the sport increasingly shifted to America even if it was a while before American born champions dominated the sport.
