Top 10 reasons behind decline in boxing & boxing following in no particular order: 1) Alphabet soup governing bodies 2) High number of weight divisions 3) Televised mismatches 4) Top fighters avoiding each other to protect record 5) Bad decisions 6) Fighters showing up out of shape, especially heavyweights 7) Almost all big fights PPV 8) MMA avoiding these pitfalls 9) Lack of press coverage (Championship bouts small blurbs on back sports pages) 10) Lack of colorful stars
1) Alphabet soup governing bodies 4) Top fighters avoiding each other to protect record = Televised mismatches 9) Lack of press coverage I think these are three main problems because with so many titles it takes the sheen of each so called world title fight unless you are dealing with a unified champion.
#1 reason in my opinion is b/c back in the days of the Heavy weight golden era of ali, frazier, foreman, etc...Black athletes weren't as involved in football and basketball. But today, youth are not pushed to boxing like back then. There is no money in boxing unless you are 1 out of 1,000,000 great fighters. In boxing and basketball, not only is there a lot of money at stake, but there is a chance of a free college education. Again, all the superior athletes are leaning towards the money making sports. boxing is simply to hard to get into and stay involved in b/c most cities dont have great gyms. But everywhere you go they have leagues for football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc... why do you think all the heavies are fat as hell. I strongly believe that the heavies today are reject athletes who couldnt cut it as a football player. So they decided to give boxing a go at a late age. They probably didnt do well in football b/c they were not committed physically or mentally. How they hell are they suppose to be any better in the most physically demanding sport there is???
This point about being perfect physical specimens is not as significant in boxing as you may thing. Cubans are not the fastest runners in the world, strongest or exceptionally gifted with high endurance but yet they have generally outperform most other countries in non professional boxing over the years. This is indicative of the greater importance of technical ability and fighting instincts are in boxing. Boxing is not about landing shots and not being hit which requires technical ability, intelligence and skills and all are independent of physical attributes. Obviously being fast, strong and fit helps but it is not as important.
. . . I don't even think it's on a decline. PPV sales keeps writting off old PPV RECORDS . . . despite tickets and PPV cost being more expensive. :deal
** American boxers. Your football is boring. Hockey is awesome, but how many Florida teens are going to rinks instead of rings?
