I don't agree with this one. PPV is a result of a decline in boxing popularity not the cause of it. You don't see the superbowl or the world series on PPV, it's not because people wouldn't pay to see it. It's because enough people want to see it that a network can justify showing it.

A network exec would be unemployed if he let ratings drop because he wnated to show boxing when a re-run of friends can draw more viewers. As a result for the big name fighters to get the purses they command the fight has to go to PPV.

Well if you are just talking about America then I dont have a problem. However, it seemed like the other poster was implying that best athletes in the world reside in America which does not concord with the facts.

main reason is lack of fights for the general public on free tv. Everything is PPV now. Who is going to pay for Chavez Jr. to fight PPV now? Not a lot of people. If he were on free tv it would have been better.

I agree with most of your opinions, but I also believe it is alot bigger than these smaller problems with the sport. In my opinion it is a cultural change that has taken place in the last 15-20 years that has led not only to the decline in boxing popularity but also to the popularity of mma. Think of how movies and t.v. shows have changed in the last 20 years. There is no more subtilty or inuendo or honest dialogue, its all ***** this, crotch that, and boobs there. Think of Alfred Hitchcock horror movies or Neil Simon comedies there is no head getting snapped off in a bear trap, or cheap laughs every 2 seconds about sex or farts. To make a long dissertation shorter boxing is like Psycho a great thriller movie that has its suspense and frights but is done so in a tasteful way. While MMA is like a Saw movie, no art, no subtilty, no dialogue, just tear your head off, stab you in the brain violence.

And now think how many kids these days would even like The Birds, Rear Window, The Apartment, or Odd Couple and you can realize why MMA has become more popular than boxing. Its sad, because its true.
p.s. I am 26 years old so I'm not one of those "In my day everything was better" old timers.

    1) Lack of a unified governing body that can license everyone's image.

Everything else is WAY back from that one. That's why there isn't sufficient press or tv coverage.

unfortunately, i cant see boxing returning to the glory days(in america) of the 90's where guys like bowe made $6-7 million to fight the likes of an old dokes or ferguson. the only people that make anything close to that now in america are the "superfighters". now that america has dropped the ball, i hope the rest of the world can pick it up and run with it.

Athlete's not being "pushed into boxing"? Horse ****. It takes a special breed. They make their choices accordingly. We like to think a LaBron James would translate to boxing, but we don't know that.

Indeed. Nothing is perfect but this is a major culprit.

Yeah the NFL has been around for 100 years. More like the collapse of the Soviet Union resulting in a rush of Eastern Fighters becoming pro is the reason there are no American contenders. Or is that just a coincidence?

I agree with all these. Except #8, and I strongly disagree with #10 in saying that boxing lacks colourful stars, as it is just nonsense.
