Top 20 Welterweights

I like your list. However, I would remove a name like Mayweather and replace with someone like Barbados Joe Walcott. Not to say Mayweather isn't great, but I rank him higher in lower divisions than at welter. I guess it does depend on how you judge.

I would also have Armstrong lower, due to similar reasons. He was a much greater force lower down in weight.
I would consider Hearns in the list due to wins over Cuevas etc. He was extremely dominant.
I also think Emile Griffith should be strongly considered for the list.

Also Ted Kid Lewis could definitely be considered.

Jimmy McLarnin as well.

Pure H2H Roberto Duran is very high as well IMO.

 

He had an intense rivalry with Jack Britton. They fought dozens of times, including for the title (20 bouts all together!), with it changing hands repeatedly.
Maybe you're thinking of Kid Berg? Lewis did start as a Bantam, and moved through the weights also.

 

Lewis fought Britton 19 times. Both he and McLarnin were world welterweight titleholders.

 

LOl I can read! I am just curious as to why? I don't see any case for outside of top 3? so I was interested in why you see him lower than the norm. I am not particularly fond of him, so I would love to move him down a few spots...I just cant find the justification for it yet. But I am open to learning

For me Its not just about the number of fights the fighter had, but who they fought, and when did they fight them I wouldn't rank Mayweatherjr in my top 10 because their are too many questions about his opponents at the weight. ( But I do rank him at Jr.Light) I also try and match the fighters against each other, if they fought 3 times, who would win 2? So of course I'll start with the Original "Sugar" R Robinson. Than, that other "Sugar" R.Leonard, T.Hearns, J.Nspoles, H,Armstrong, K.Gavilan,E.Griffith,R.Duran( a surprise pick, but Duran would've dominated the welters without Leonard,Hearns or Benitez) Benitez, then Cuevas believe it or not. I don't rank fighters that have little to no film on them. Walker, Ross etc I'm sure were excellent fighters. But I don't judge a fighter by what someone has said, who probably heard someone else say it, than bang their legends. More than likely the men who praise Walker as the greatest, never saw Robinson, and definitely didn't see Leonard.
