Burley was conceding 6.5lbs and 9 lbs for those two fights.

So if burley was such a small middleweight maybe he should be rated at welterweight instead

He was great enough to beat middles and higher but he is rather hard to pigeon hole.I read Springs Toledo's Murderers Row recently, excellent book! GGG doesn't make my top 15 but he could hang with any 160pounder there has been imo . The quality scalps aren't there on his belt and maybe won't be ,I think he is probably just beginning to decline.

In actual fact, Jacobs did not "hit him at will". Maybe watch the fight more than once and slo-mo the bits where Jacobs flurries and looks like he's doing something. Most of his shots were slipped or picked off on Golovkin's gloves. Just because GGG doesn't sway around like a tree in a storm, doesn't mean that his defence is not effective. Secondly, Jacobs is massive for a MW. He skipped the weigh in for the IBF title so that he'd have an extra day to rehydrate. He was probably north of 180 on fight night. Some claim 185. But GGG still dropped him and outscored him. It's a clear win. A competitive fight - yes - but a win.

Canelo was very likely the mutant product of some intensive clenbuterol therapy. Even so he was outstruck, unable to stand his ground against Golovkin and handed a boxing lesson.

    ^Opinion.

    1) Ward never stepped up to the plate to face Golovkin, even when GGG was by far the smaller man. There was an offer on the table. Ward never wanted any part of Golovkin. :deal:
    2) Ward was 168. We're talking about 160. If you think this makes sense, then Hagler needs to be downgraded because he never faced Spinks. See how that works?

Uh, yeah. Ward's barely stepped out of Oakland. He's a dirty fighter and and ugly fighter to watch. Moreover he lost against Kovalev and was given the win. GGG never got any gifts in his career.

    Mendoza and mirkofilipovic like this.

Jacobs-GGG was very close. Most scored it within a point for two. Hardly a clear win for GGG. Jacobs landed plenty on ggg couldn’t miss him with the jab. Jacobs doesn’t have a strong chin, and ggg couldn’t put him away.

Ward didn’t “step up” to fight ggg he stepped up to fight a bigger better fighter in Kovalev. Ward went 2-0 against Kovalev. You bring up the controversial first fight, but fail to mention Ward stopping him in the rematch.

Who does ggg have on his resume who resembles anything like a Kovalev? Ward will always go down as greater in the record books for those wins alone.

Wards resume blows ggg out of the water

    Kovalev 2x
    Dawson
    Kessler
    Froch
    Abraham
    Bika

Compared to GGGs resume which consists of Jacobs then a bunch of Sergio Martinez left overs

Where does Ward rate at middle weight Suzie?

Your mixing apples with oranges. Hardly a good way to make a point. Besides most felt Kovalev won the first fight.

    Martinez would not fight GGG.

If you watched GGG 4 years ago it’s easy to see he was past his prime for Jacobs. How many middle weights 35 or older would have beaten Jacobs? Only use middle weight 35 or older. Go for it! I predict a short list and an error or two on your part, but at least your game.

Ward stopped Kovalev in the rematch. Fail to mention that? I know you’re a big fan of kovalev. He went 0-2 against a 168lber in his legacy defining fights.

Ward rates all time at 168lb and above kovalev and ggg on any p4p list..

Golovkin had plenty of chances to fight Ward..and he never did. Instead, Ward bumped up to fight kovalev and ggg stayed pat.

Whom do you rate higher p4p all Time Ward or ggg?

Not fair to compare different eras when 34 years old was considered old back in the day...where as now golovkin has benefited from modern nutrition training, peds

    But I’ll bite

Golovkin was 34. Not 35 when he fought Jacobs.

SRR, Hopkins, Monzon, Zale, giardello, Fitzsimmons, Tiger, S Martinez, McCallum off the top of my head at age 34 would beat Jacobs

I’m sure their are plenty more

Still waiting to hear from someone on who ggg has beaten that constitutes him a top 10 ranking all time at 160?

Such pathetic fanboyism. Golovkin was just 34 against Jacobs not 44 and he looked just as vulnerable against Kasim Ouma in his 20's.
He managed to get the stoppage against southpaw Ouma because he was a 154 pound journeyman that was nowhere near as good as Jacobs. But he did have the same kind of quickness Jacobs had , which is why he was able to land so much leather on Golovkins head.

It was the same with Brook - he beat GGG to the punch and hit him with shots that could have spelled doom for GGG if they were thrown by a MW puncher.

Making these lame excuses for Golovkin only exposes how little substance you have to work with in your attempts to hold GGGs resume to such a high standing.

We all saw a 35 y/o Martinez trounce Ring and Lineal Champ Kelly Pavlik one sided and Pavlik is a better opponent than Canelo who hasn't a MW win to his name.

We also saw 35 y/o battle worn MaCallum put up a better effort against James Toney than GG against Canelo.. You going claim Canelo is better than Toney next?? lol

If Jacobs had been handed the win it would have been the worst robbery in the last 20 years. No way he won that.

Jacobs' best punches were to the body. His jab was a non-factor. You sure you watched the right fight?

Marcos Geraldo had 21/28 losses by KO and Marvin Hagler couldn't put him away. I guess Hagler was no good.

So he ducked Golovkin? Sounds like it. Recently, just before he retired, GGG's team said again that they were open to a fight at 168. Ward declined, yet again.

Yeah and Toney beat Tiberi
He hit his ballsack like a pinata. And the ref was OK with it. What a surprise he won.

Golovkin never fought at 175, let alone 168. Who does Monzon or Hagler have on their resume that even resembles a Kovalev? Nobody.

is a 168 - 175 fighter. He's got nothing to do with this discussion, actually. :eaea:

Dino: Golovkin put Ouma into the hospital. GGG's vulnerable!

Booool****. Ouma had the chin and the nuts to go toe-to-toe with GGG and got wrecked for his efforts. Jacobs fought from the outside and tried to flurry and move. The two fights are not even REMOTELY the same. Dumbohelmet trying to spin his own reality as always ....

Dino: Brook hit GGG and got sent to the hospital as a result! GGG is vulnerable!

Brook was heavier than Golovkin for that fight  Dildovelvet inventing his own narrative, again.

Worst robbery in last 20 years? Take off your rose colored glasses. Most scored Jacobs ggg within a point or two. GGG fought like a statue, feet stuck in the mud. Jacobs couldn’t miss him.

It’s just golovkin made a career out of highlight knockout victories over B and C level fighters...then when he steps up and fights his first A level opponents, he goes the distance with Canelo and Jacobs

Ward fights a bigger stronger better kovalev, but he’s afraid of GGG? Good one. GGG wanted no part of a master boxer like Ward who would have exposed all his flaws

Ahhh excuses for both kovalev Ward fights I see..Ward completely dominated the second half of the first kovalev fight and countered him to death, while kovalev made no adjustments after round 5. In the second fight in round 8..he buzzed kovalev badly with a right to the head..then Left to the body...at this point kovalev was looking for a way out..he then hit him again to the body belt line and kovalev bent over and quit...this is the same kovalev whose a bigger stronger version of GGG

At least monzon and hagler defeated great fighters at 160. Golovkin fought in the weakest middleweight era of all time and knocked out B and C level fighters..then failed to establish clear supremacy over Canelo in the biggest fight of his career

Someone rated ggg over Ward p4p...I had to comment. Had everything to do with it. Ward was much greater fighter

I think Ward rates slightly higher than GGG even if he lost the first fight to Kovalev on fair score cards and low blowed his way to winning the re-match. Both are 1st ballot hall of fame guys.

As for the names you mentioned at age 34, if anyone of them lost to a lesser figher than Jacobs, you can cross them off your list in some cases

At a biz conference for the week.

Golovkin drove him back, pierced his guard and smacked him up. Jacobs was dropped, Golovkin not even close.

At an age when most other fighters are retired ... ... but let's ignore that ...

 Ward is a 160 fighter, now?

He's declined Golovkin twice. A much smaller GGG, who isn't even a big MW, who would have to go up in weight, was declined by Ward again. Ward doesn't want it. Do you REALLY need the article where he says he won't face him even at 168?

Nobody like Kovalev, ever. However, feel free to rate them over Golovkin. I do too.
