No exact order.... (only about 2 or 3 in the list are still in their prime, I tried to make a list of all guys past their best but some guys I couldnt leave out) Fedor Emelianenko Kazushi Sakuraba Wanderlei Silva Randy Couture Chuck Liddell Frank Shamrock Matt Hughes Rickson Gracie Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira BJ Penn George St Pierre Anderson Silva Royce Gracie Marco Ruas Tito Ortiz Guys with time left to crack the list or just missed out - Rampage Jackson, Muaricio `Shogun` Rua, Don Frye, Mark Coleman, Ken Shamrock, Pat Militech. :thumbsup
Good list, I agree with almost all of it. What I am slightly skeptical about is Marco Ruas. Are you basing this on influence on the sport or actual achievements? I understand that Ruas is a pioneer, but as far as MMA goes he hasn't achieved as much as some others that I would put on the list. At the moment I would probably replace him with Mark Coleman.
my top 10 in no order have been chosen for being able to dominate as champion at a particular time in the sport. i am not saying Royce Gracie would beat Cro Cop, rather when Gracie fought he was the best in the world. Rickson Gracie Kazushi Sakuraba Royce Gracie Randy Couture / Dan Severn Fedor Emelianenko Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Wanderlei Silva Dan Henderson Anderson Silva George St Pierre
Good list, I should have included Henderson at least on my honourable mention list, forgot about him. Initially I set out to do a top 10 but there were too many good guys being left out so I did the 15. :good
I hear what your saying about Ruas, I wouldnt put a great argument up for having him on the list, I just felt he was possibly the 1st guy in MMA/NHB to be well rounded & showed that strikers could be successfull in the cage even tho he likely wouldnt have been succesfull without his grappling skills but you get my point, he was something dynamic & new in UFC 7 after the Grapplers had won the previous 6 tourneys... Royce (UFC 1,2 & 4), Jennum (UFC 3), Severn (UFC 5) & Taktarov (UFC 6.) Ruas also trained guys like Pedro Rizzo & is a legend in vale tudo matches in Brazil & has his own fighting style `Ruas vale tudo.` Like Rickson, he was kinda old when he came to America & spent his best yrs in Brazil tho. :good
Unfortunately, my list will make me seem as if I don't know much about the history of MMA. It isn't true, I just feel that it is important to acknowledge that the fighters of today ARE better fighters than the fighters of the earlier MMA era. It's just not true, in my opinion, to say Royce Gracie is a top fighter in MMA history just because he revolutionized the sport. No one pretends John Sullivan was as good as Joe Louis just because he came first. With that said, the pioneers of the sport have my utmost respect. They were the greatest in their time. They were truly the best fighters in the world. The thing is though, the best fighters in the world have gotten a lot lot lot better. With that in mind, in no order. Fedor Emelienanko Georges St. Pierre Anderson Silva BJ Penn Matt Hughes Chuck Lidell Dan Henderson Antonio Nogueira Rampage Jackson Randy Couture.
Fair enough. I mean there is no doubt that he was on of the pioneers in modern MMA with his Vale Tudo, and I think if he had come around at the right time (like say Rickson Gracie) he would have made a more visible impact on the sport. Like I said before, I would replace him with Mark Coleman who achieved a huge amount. Two UFC tournaments, first UFC heavyweight champion and Pride GP 2000 champion. Not many have achieved more than that, as much as I dislike the guy.
Good list but Sakuraba & Wanderlei should be able to find a way on there, **** it, Im gonna drop 5 & do a top 10 list later, I have to run now but I`ll be back soon. :good
Here is my (very hard to do) top 10....... Fedor Emelianenko Kazushi Sakuraba Wanderlei Silva Chuck Liddell Randy Couture Frank Shamrock Matt Hughes BJ Penn Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Anderson Silva Ps. It was close between GSP & Anderson, GSP still has time to crack my top 10 but he could de-rail in his next fight & would be regarded as a nearly man as he is still young, lets see what happens. Rickson Gracie should be there on grappling ability alone but I cant include him over guys that have fought elite fighters so his resume so to speak keeps him out tho he could likely beat most guys on my list (personal opinion.)
Frank subbed Hendo. I know Dan improved but the result remains the same prime for prime. You really cant fault Frank for his comp as it was a little watered down with the exception of Sak.
