Somebody in the Lounge said today's boxers would beat boxers in the 1950s. I think it's a push and that when taken as a whole boxing talent remains relatively constant. Ratings as per The Ring. Top 2 by division 1950 vs 2019 Heavyweight: Ezzard Charles and Joe Louis vs Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder Light Heavyweight: Joey Maxim and Archie Moore vs Artur Beterbiev and Canelo Alvarez Middleweight: Jake LaMotta and Ray Robinson vs Canelo and Golovkin Welterweight: Ray Robinson and Kid Gavilan vs Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr Lightweight: Ike Williams and John L. Davis vs Vasyl Lomachenko and Richard Commey Featherweight: Sandy Saddler and Willie Pep vs Leo Santa Cruz and Josh Warrington Bantamweight: Vic Toweel and Luis Romero vs Naoya Inoue and Luis Nery Flyweight: Dado Marino and Jean Sneyers vs Kosei Tanaka and Moruti Mthalane
i agree with the idea that today's guys would beat the yesterday's ones but not because of talent. its rather related to the progress and evolution of every area that improves performance in any sport: diet, training methodologies, PEDs, medicine, media(availability of footage) and so on.
I feel Charles and Louis would have really close fights v Fury and Wilder due to the size differences, Fury could outbox Louis and Charles but Louis could score a come from behind KO because of his handspeed and combos, Wilder`s power would be too much though and his reach would be a huge problem. Alvarez would beat Maxim and Moore because of his tight guard and fast counters but Betebiev would likely lose to Moore because he is less skilled unless he caught him flush a 50/50 chance of that I`d say, he`d overpower Maxim. Canelo and GG would do better v Robi than LaMotta did in his final bout v Robi, I haven`t seen their other clashes, GGG and Canelo are both better defensively than Robi and LaMotta were, but Robi could outwork Canelo who is mainly a counter puncher now, GGG would land more punches on Robi than Canelo would but would get caught by more of Robi`s amazing counter combo`s as a result. Crawford v Robi would a battle of the counter masters I give Bud an edge but Robi`s right hooks to the side would do a lot of damage, Bud would beat Gavilan, Robi would land too many counters on Spence, Gavilan v Spence would be a 50/50 toss up. Loma and Comney would beat Ike and Davis. Pep and Saddler would probably beat Josh and Cruz in close fights, I don`t feel they would land much on Pep though.
The elite fighters today sometimes have better fundamentals, Loma is the most skilled fighter I`ve ever seen but Pep was something else too etc.
No. It's 1950 vs 2019. I made it fair by only going year for year. It's the Ring ratings for champ and number one contender.
Right, that's why he's still ranked at welterweight and LaMotta is the champ he won the title off of. Ray defended his title at Welterweight against Charley Fusari then beat some tough middleweights like Bobo Olson and Robert Villemain to get ranked as the number one contender at the end of the year. In February of '51 he took the title from LaMotta. Here's all of Ring's annual ratings for 1950 if you want to check. https://boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine's_Annual_Ratings:_1950
I don't see Canelo beating Moore. Moore was a true lhw great, probably the best ever. You say Canelo would beat Moore after only 1 fight against a pitty patting Kovalev. I highly doubt that.
Well, it isn't fair because a bunch of modern weight classes are left out. No Usyk, Davis, Taylor, Berchelt or Estrada.
1. Louis wasn't very good in 1950 and Ezzard was 184 pounds. Edge:Modern 2. Moore was better than the others by a margin. Maxim not so much. Edge: 1950 3. Golovkin is finished Edge: 1950 4. Welter is obviously 1950. 5. Lomachenko and Haney get the edge. Maybe not with Commey. Even. 6. Feather is obviously 1950 7. Bantam is today 8. No ****ing clue about flyweight 4-2-1 to 1950
