he's in plenty of top 30 lists today so he's pretty solid for the era i agree

Packey is around my top 21-30 without a doubt. Feel bad to have overlooked him for this thread, an obvious pick.

Have to confuse matters further Im afraid.

Mysterious Billy Smith, Charlie Mitchell, Joe Choynski, Pedlar Palmer, Elbows McFadden, Dave Holly, Young Corbett II, Bat Nelson would likley fall into the mix.

Perhaps Dixie Kid, Joe Jeanette, Bat Nelson and Freddie Welsh as well.

Dave Holly and Billy Smith have wins that could merit them mention up there(good call), but I'm not sure that the same could be said of Charlie Mitchell or Choynski. Looking at the list I can't see who I would replace with those two.

Charlie Mitchell actualy beat many of the top heavyweight contenders while Sullivan was champion. Consider his weight, and the fact that this is a p4p list.

Same argument with Choynski realy. He gave up weight when he ate breakfast.

Not saying who they should replace, but they should surely be in the argument.

There was no more spectacular physical talent up to that point than William "The Prussian" Sheriff.

I agree that Mitchell is impressive when one considers how small he was, but what exactly were his accomplishments that would merit him even a mention? He was, at best, the 5th or 6th best heavyweight of his era. P4P I'm not sure you could even place him in a top 10 from 1880-1895, let alone all the way up to 1910. Think about it- What wins garner him any high acclaim? He was inferior to Sullivan, Corbett and Dominick McCaffrey. I wouldn't place him above Peter Jackson or Paddy Slavin. You could make cases for other HWs of his era being above him as well.

His resume pales in comparison to even Tom Sharkey's.

    Boxed Ears, I apologise :bowdown

I conjured up Lucky Sambo as a 'typical' moniker for an old time 'coloured' fighter; did not realise there was actually a fighter that went by this name :patsch

 Sorry about the ulcer, Matthew. I know you get upset when old, obscure fighters unknown to boxrec come up.

What the hell? http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=19083&cat=boxer :rofl No wonder he wasn't successful. You can't use that name in the nineteen-nineties. :patsch Okay, I'm done. I can't go on. It's over. It's over, McGrain. That killed it. I'm outta here.
