Historically: Jack Dempsey - I don't consider him top 10 HW all time. I have him at #13 Rocky Marciano - I have him at #10, some have him at #3 Jake LaMotta - A very good fighter - underated on General - historically, he's overated by many and head to head. Roy Jones Junior - I have him at #21 all time p4p, some have him in the ten, that is to high. Larry Holmes - Overated head to head in my view. Current Alexander Povetkin - A good fighter, but not the heir apparent people are making him out to be. He is short on experience and power. YOu must have one or the other at the highest level as a HW. Roy Jones Junior - He's not beating Calzaghe fellas. Chad Dawson - He's been found out. But some people just don't see it that way. Mikkel Kessler - An excellent figher, but he's defined by "one-dimensional" at the highest level. Winky Wright.
Ponce Deleon. Who did he beat that was amazing? He knocked out bums and was everyone was saying he should be feared.
The Ring are among those boxing publications I mentioned earlier that overrate these 2. They had both of these guys within the top 15 or so in 2002, of fighters among the last 80 years. I used to underrate Rocky myself but lately I've begun to think more highly of him. Sonny Liston is someone that the more I learn about, the higher I regard.
Tarver and paul williams for me. tarver becuz i felt that when he threw the lucky tarver punch..... ahh forget it, u know wah i mean
I don't think that a rating much higher than 19 can possibly be justified. So we disagree, because having him at five, or seven, or ONE like some of these guys do, is ludicrous. All the fighters I feel are overated historically qualify as ATG's, they can still be overated.
Of course he could be overrated. Anyone can be. Foreman had amazingly heavy hands, a solid jab, and good ring-cutting skills, but got increasingly sloppy as he fell in love with his power. Old bald Foreman learned to relax in the ring and was smarter, but as expected, lost some of his physical gifts. If you combined the two for their positive attributes, it'd be a scary thought. Actually the main reason I talk about him being overrated is how he tends to get overrated historically. His resume of wins over top guys is rather thin. The Joe Frazier win was great no doubt, and the Ken Norton win was good. Outside of that, there was Ron Lyle, and some decent wins over the likes of Peralta and Chuvalo. In his 2nd career, the one true world class HW he beat was Moorer for the title, along with some guys who were fringe contenders at the time. He was incredibly selective in who he fought, and often even struggled anyway. I'm more impressed with fighters who stay active and beating good fighters.
i really don't get the feeling that pryor is OVERrated, i think he's rated as high as he should be given his victories over arguello (2x) and cervantes how about kostya tszyu at the same weight? i mean i like the guy but i always felt he was a little overrated because he seems like such a nice guy (his speech after the hatton fight), plus he took out zab when zab was peaking in terms of hype
Here is my list...[I know alot of people are not going to be happy but...] ATG: Pernell Whitaker Carlos Monzon Rocky Marciano Jack Dempsey Aaron Pryor Hector Camacho Current: Roy Jones Jr. Floyd Mayweather Jr. V. Klitschko
I thought Tszyu was an excellent fighter. When he was younger at least, he had pretty quick hands. He picked his shots well, had a good sense of timing and distance, heavy hands, strength, etc... Not the best head movement though. I remember him once being described as "an A fighter with a B resume". I think this is accurate. Tszyu has a nice list of solid fighters he beat, especially given when he beat them and his relative inexperience at the time, but no real wins that jump out at you.
That's exactly why Pryor is overrated. He only has two names on his record and both were on the definite downslide. And not to mention that Arguello did not belong at 140 while Cervantes was going on his 100th fight!
