I think Tyson would close the distance too rapidly for Tunney to escape, & punch too hard & fast with timed bombs for him to avoid or take.
Agreed on the seemingly consensus thought of Holy and Tyson being above Dempsey. What struck out to me was how Tunney was above Schemling. There was no logical justification for that in my book. And I just couldn't understand it.
Thanks for the support. Now i think about it, you're absolutely right. :good Max was a Heavyweight his whole career & has several good wins, including: Uzcudun, Heuser & Walker, plus his Great win over Louis (who even if pre-prime was an exceptional fighter in '36) far trumps Tunney's two wins over rusty, past-prime Dempsey.
mcgrain made a convincing argument that schmeling vs louis COULD be the greatest win in heavyweight history
Same Here. As a Heavyweight Schemling is simply the greater fighter. Personally I prefer to rate Tunney as a Light Heavyweight. Kalasinn - Tunney doesn't fare better than Spinks. Even if he moves, he'll just delay the inevitable. Seamus, you're right on the money. Although for Jack Johnson I rate him highly based on his body of work at the "colored heavyweight champ" more so than his actual reign. Sam McVea Sam Langford Joe Jeannette Jim Jeffries Stanley Ketchel Bob Fitzsimmons Tommy Burns
Wow, thank you very much guys!! The support is overwhelming. Especially Jorodz! lol I had a real good laugh at that Im really sorry to the Germany fans! I had no idea this would happen, and thank you very much Tommy for helping them out!! I also think Tunney shouldnt have been ranked higher than Max, and I also agree that Walcott should have been higher than Charles. Dempsey above Tyson and Holyfield is definitely something I highly agree with. For me, it comes down to being an all around greater fighter. Sure, if Tyson and Dempsey started their careers at the exact same time, the prime Tyson may be more fascinating to watch (by a little). But what happens when they get older? I see Dempsey converting to more of a boxer, like he did back in his day. And I see Tyson struggling to make that conversion. Dempsey could still fight no matter how old he was. Tyson had much more of a struggle. And in my opinion, Tysons late career woes doesnt compare with anything in Dempseys career, except for maybe the time he took a dive.
My only gripes are that Marciano is too low and Dempsey is waaaaay too low :yep - no but seriously this was a awesome video - absolutely amazing - you probably won't take me seriously but I think guys like you do an amazing service to boxing and its rich heritage by bringing up to the minute and bringing to life the greats of yesteryear who might otherwise get overlooked by many young fans - an amazing peice of work this - the Frazier bit was just brutal and it was good to see Jack Johnson up there high-ish aswell - nuff respect Rez :good Level Vibes:hat PS great to see Combateo and Foreman Hook getting their dues and their names up in lights - two of my personal hero's - big shout out to them :happy
:happy Beautiful video, man. Great job, professional quality and possibly the best HW list I've seen anywhere. Everyone did a good job. The music, the timing, amazing. Great mix of emotion and fun, kept it fresh. Eh, I was rooting for Marciano to be above Holmes though. Wasn't meant to be this time.
Good, aggregate, consensus list. (And I'm not just saying that on account of its dazzling similarity to my personal list.):yep BTW, Rez, Great Work ! :good
I'm probably the greatest fan of Tunney on this board, but when judging greatness in a division it is not about what you think a fighter could have done but what that fighter actually did against foes in said division. Speculation is pure bull****. Tunney was a great LHW and a guy good enough to beat fellow LHW's Carpentier and Gibbons and a washed up guy named Dempsey. That does not a great heavyweight resume make.
Just throwing my two cents in... I absolutely, wholeheartedly agree with Dempsey being above Holyfield and Tyson. In fact in my humble opinion I would have had him higher. Perhaps I am rendering my opinion moot by saying now that I consider Toledo Dempsey in the top three all time HWs. But either way, I would like to throw my support behind Dempsey above the two aforementioned greats. My main problem was with Marciano as high as he was. I guess the topic has been argued to death, but yeah, I can't really understand this one. Ditto for Gene Tunney. But a great video, Rez! Stylistically, and with the choices of music! The final Ali piece was epic and got me misty-eyed over a boxer whom I do not really care for all that much.
I agree with everything you said but the bold thing. Only Ali was more iconic than Dempsey and no other fighter past-Jeffries surpassed him. Walcott over Jeffries? I´d like to hear your reasoning.
