Okay this was a tough list to make out and i know im gonna hear it on a few, especially the Margarito one,but bottom line there is no proof he ever had handwraps against Cotto,Cintron etc etc or all his other previous wins and imo im not writing him off as a top fighter just cause of the Mosley loss and alleged suspicions. I have to rank him above Cotto here. Also am gonna keep Rafa Marquez and Izzy high until we see what they got left in their upcoming fight, a year ago i would have had them a close 2nd and 3rd behind JMM, they havent been active so their stock went down slightly. Not much separating a lot of these guys though. Oh yeah i dont know where to rate Joan Guzman if he would have came in at the weight limit he might been in the top 15 but he didnt and i dont think he will be elite at Welter. So i just put him as honorable mention. 1.Juan M Marquez Mexico 2.Sergio Martinez Argentina 3.Yurikois Gamboa Cuba 4.Israel Vasquez Mexico 5.Rafeal Marquez Mexico 6.Edwin Valero Venenzuela 7.Celestino Caballero Panama 8.Antonio Margarito Mexico 9.Miguel Cotto Puerto Rico 10.Yohnny Perez Colombia 11.Fernando Montiel Mexico 12.Anselmo Moreno Panama 13.Humberto Soto Mexico 14.Juan M Lopez Puerto Rico 15.Robert Guerrero Gilroy,Ca 16.Nehemar Ceremano Venenzuela 17.Abner Mares Montebello,Ca 18.Carlos Quintana Puerto Rico 19.Luis Collazo New York,NY 20.Marcos Maidana Argentina 21.Giovanni Segura Bell Gardens,Ca 22.Rocky Juarez Houston,TX 23.Victor Ortiz Garden City,KS 24.Joan Guzman Dominican Republic 25.Juan Diaz Houston,Tx Honarable Mentions Kermit Cintron,Alfred Angulo,Daniel Ponce Deleon, Chris Arreola,David Lopez,Elio Rojas,Steve Luevano
A top 20 so good it has 25 people in it :hey I'd have Cotto a bit higher myself, Vasquez and R.Marquez haven't fought a top opponent for a long time, they could both be ready for the glue factory. Cotto was competitve with Paquaio for the first few rounds at least and probably still beats all but the elite welters. Junior middle is pretty thin on talent as he's going there he could have a second peak to his career. Also I'd have Juan Diaz over Rocky Juarez. Both have had their limitations exposed but Diaz has won at the top level while Juarez has come up short against every top fighter he's fought that I can think of.
Edwin Valero is one of my three favorite fighters right now, so naturally I would want him to be at the top of this list. It's a great list though!
Yey you got a good point about Diaz and Juarez i just dont like Diaz at JW and it looks like he is gonna stay there. I think he is a better fighter than Juarez but im not so sure about his future. Juarez at least had a draw with a PFP(although Controversial). I didnt like the way Diaz looked in his last fight with Paulie. I think Cotto is placed about right, you have to remember those guys above him are fresher and pretty damn good fighters themselves in fact that whole list of fighters are all top guys in their weight class. Like i said earlier Ill wait until after their fight to revaluate Marquez and Vasquez they deserve their high ranking until after this fight. I think Marquez still has something left, i think Vasquez is faded but i cant but Rafa over Izzy since he has lost 2 out of those 3. I cant see putting Cotto above any of the guys i listed. I think he is still a top notch fighter but definitely faded. Oh yeah i originally put top 20 But i forgot JuanaMa and Quintana and just decided to leave the others in and add a couple honorable mentions.
Yey he is probably better than Marquez and Vasquez right now but until i see what those guys have left im not gonna put Valero above him since his resume isnt close to those guys. We will see in May.
Im not sure what you are aiming at here, relevancy? accomplishments? H2H? Skill? Because after #1 its all over the place
I think Diaz should stick to lightweight. Surely he can still make it, he wasn't exactly chiselled as a lightweight. He does have good wins over Frietas, Julio Diaz and Micheal Katsidis all in the last 3 years where Juarez has bounced between featherweight and Junior light and not really excelled in either, I actually thought he won the first Barrera fight but the ass whooping he got in the rematch negates it. Other than that he has a controversial draw with Chris John (I thought he lost) and a serious boxing lesson from him. Anyway that's all I can add to this thread, unfortunately since Setanta went bust I don't get to see many hispanic fighters anymore. I do like Martinez though, I'm picking him against Pavlik assuming that fight actually happens.
I am also picking Martinez style wise he is gonna give Pavlik a boxing lesson, although i give the bigger Pavlik a punchers chance. As for Diaz well i thought he was very good a few years ago and he was actually a top 15 PFP for a little bit i even saw him in some peoples top 10,but his time has passed. Like i said if Diaz was still at LW he would be much higher maybe around 10 spots higher on this list, but Juarez can punch a little and he has only lost to the best and been very competetive with a couple of the top guys, he would still beat almost all of the top contenders.
Has he confirmed he's staying at LWW? He's only fought over lightweight twice for the 2 Malinaggi fights if I'm not mistaken, I don't think it's too late to go back. I'd definitely sat that extra bit of size hurt him, he can't pressure those guys like he could at lightweight.
lol some of those selections are ridiculous there's no way gamboa and valero should be ranked so high especially after how average yuriorkis looked against barros, and especially considering how far down you've got miguel cotto
My mistake i thought he had a fight with Peterson, but i checked and nothing scheduled for him. Early in his career he actually started out at JW had his first 10 fights at that weight. I feel he lost a little speed when he moved up, he seemed much quicker at LW and i dont think it was Malinaggi that made him look slower. He wasnt a good puncher at LW so im sure his power isnt all that at JW either.
