No. 6 - another Germany-based WBO titlist from the 1990s. It's almost like there's a pattern to these.
And I really need to set aside some time watching Artur Grigorian because he's apparently the sixth greatest lightweight of all time.
1. Benny Leonard 2. Roberto Duran 3. Joe Gans 4. Ike Williams 5. Carlos Ortiz 6. Tony Canzoneri 7. Pernell Whitaker 8. Lou Ambers 9. Freddie Welsh 10. Joe Brown Top 3 names are pretty much a no-brainer but 4-10 is trickier. Might review and revise later.
Good, that clears that up then. I'd love to hear your rationale for Artur Grigorian being the 6th best lightweight of all time! Personally, I think he's debatable as the 6th best lightweight of the 90s, let alone the best 135 pounders who've ever lived, but do tell...
It's a shame Artur couldn't get the big fights with these guys who were ranked when he was ,but of course they all ducked him.All 25 of them. Jauregui Mosley Nazarov Johnston Holiday Molina Johnson Robinson Gatti Cardona Scott Casamayor Lorcy Gonzalez Corralles Serrano Castillo Spadafora Dunne Bazan Lazcano Dorin Manfredy Mayweather Leija
He was a complete fighter. Nothing jumps out at first - he’s not a home run hitter or a speedster, but he could do it all and was a great thinker. Had excellent timing, sense and control of distance and whilst not slick defensively he wasn’t that easy to find. He was a master at adapting hence his re-matches record. To me there’s no question he is the greatest Puerto Rican fighter of all-time and top 5 Lightweight.
Dare I say the unsayable and that Ike Williams has become a tad overrated? He's definitely an ATG and maybe even a Top 5 LW... but let's not get over our collective skis. He's not in front of Duran, Leonard, Canzoneri, Gans or Whitaker and probably Ortiz in my book. And it's a good book.
