In terms of dominance, aswell as length of reign and losses you need to look at how they dominated their contemparies and how many rounds they lost. In this respect Vitali, Wlad, Mayweather, Jones rate very highly As a an actual champion Robinson wasn't that dominant, as many of his title fights were past prime. Joe Louis is mentioned but he has 2-3 controversal decisions on his record. Monzon and PEpp certainly deserve their mention
Easily the Klitschkos. They have scared everybody so much that even the top contenders like Haye or Povetkin know they have no chance and are panicaly avoiding the fight. I don't remember that happening in any era before. It might be a weak division but the Klitschkos are showing an unprecedented level of domination.
Yeah, he was over the hill by the time he won the belt in that 3rd Briscoe fight..that's how Hugo Corro was able to shade him like he did...not that Hugo was a bad fighter...
JOE LOUIS IS TOPS - reigned for almost 12 years and made 25 defences (won 23? by knockout!!) - if not for world war II there may have been another 5 or so defences added to that number (probably all KO's LOL) - the Schmeling defeat aside from his own peak to the end of his actual championship reign (which basically covered from 1935 to 1948) only 4 men stayed the distance with (and the 3 of those who pushed their luck a 2nd time were KO'd in the next get go) - and this period took in champion scalps in Primo Carnera, Max Baer, Jack Sharkey, Max Schmeling, Jimmy Braddock, John Henry Lewis, Billy Conn and Jersey Joe Walcott all by KO
Joe Louis 25 consecutive title defences, champion for 11 years in an era where there was only 1 champion, retired (the first time) with a win against the #1 contender, and he was a heavyweight too. Louis craps all over every other champion ever, he is just clearly ahead of everyone else in terms of championship dominance.
True. He probably lost the first Walcott fight. However, this was after the WWII layoff, he was no longer at his peak, he avenged it with a KO win in the rematch. Arguably losing and getting a questionable decision late in a dominant career is the only blemish on his reign and it is a mild one. Even if he had lost officially, his reign would still be #1.
Just remember they were mentioned before in these forums after your post. Benny Leonard ? at least once refused weigh ins , most of his title reign fights included non title fights and had losses every once in a while. Duran fought above the LW limit for most of his title reign there , was knocked down in at least 2 fights there , and I read he was dirty during that reign just to add to it , not that it was one of the top criteria here About Ricardo Lopez and Orlando Canizales I did not know except from their names so I will include them now. And your list would have been worse for sure despite you remembered those guys which you were wrong about at least one of them (Benny Leonard) you would have forgotten others and had the nerve to discredit a list without posting your list to measure. I was almost certain my list was flawed because I did not put much thought nor time into it but rather posted it as a first version of a list I hoped to improve although dominance is not one of the most interesting things for me about fighters .
He is quite close to the top but he never cleaned any division he held a belt at and was far from that especially during his title reigns 160 and 191+ . Yet I ranked him quite high in the list , top 20 for all time in all weight classes is close to the top.
