Hey flea ill admit i went to box records, but only to confirm what i already knew. Believe this Flea i was very aware of Ike Williams before you even started watching boxing, in fact i met him before you probably started watching boxing as he lived in Los Angeles area after he retired and was always at the fights before he passed away. So dont give me this Boxing records Bs like if thats were i get my knowledge from. I already know my ****,but the site is good when im not 100% on the facts.

Probably not many...but Ill whack down a few I think could.

    Dupas
    Napoles
    Williams
    Ross
    Duran
Maybe someone like Graham aswell..who could have probably picked up a trinket today at the stage he was at as a young lightweight and at his best at welter was a fine boxer.

I base this a lot on the fact I also think Oscar had a bad night that night aswell...He got dragged into Shane's fight because I think he seriously believed that no lightweight could come up and be stronger then him. He was sorely wrong and only just lost that one IMO. He definitely fought more aggressive and traded more then he did against Tito the year before, which is a skilled brawler like Mosley's bread and butter kind of fight.
Call it his Leonard moment if you want...and based on that I do feel some of the better lightweights with frames to move up could have edged him out on that night even if they maybe couldnt repeat the feat.

I also dont think it should be an automatic assumption that Shane was a natural lightweight like in the same way Duran was.He was never going to be able to stay down at lightweight for more then a couple of years anyway. I lost count of the articles Ive read that talk of him struggling to make the weight and being dehydrated during his lightweight fights. He often was coming in as a jnr middleweight come fight time and I dont think Shane Mosley would have ever been able to sustain much of a career at lightweight in the era of same day weigh ins.
So in that respect I totally feel that he was on a level playing field by the time he faced Oscar, just to put that feat into perspective. He was well and truly a welterweight by then and IMO looked better then he ever did at light.

One other thing to add anarci..Shane looked pretty average against the best guy he faced at lightweight. I just dont rate his reign there very much at all, though I have often defended it more then attacked it over the years. His body of work after is what makes him great in my eyes. He has some excellent wins but some bad losses and periods of inconsistency that take away from his overall H2H standing.
I just dont see anything resembling a top 40 fighter in resume or ability when I look at Shane Mosley.

Well they won't on here. We judge on what we know. What Mosley has is not going to look as good as say, Gavilan just because it's 20 years on.

    Anarci,

Do you feel boxing has evolved, gotten better..thats the feats of todays fighters are on par or greater then ones of the past?

I totally agree about people underrating in a historical sense..you need a few years to sit on that ****...but I think the way boxing has come along culturally it means that todays fighters have a lot more to do to surpass the greats from the past.

Being a champion today is so much different to being a champion 50 years ago...More divisions, more titles dilute what it means to call yourself a world champion. Almost without exception fighters fight less often, over less rounds and not always against the best available.

A fighter like Shane winning a piece of the title at lightweight for instance. He may have been the best around on paper and looked the best on film, he may have cleaned house if he was given the chance but you cant definitively say he was the best in the division at the time without him proving it in the ring.
So when people say that Shane winning a title at lightweight and then going up and winning one at welter is like what Duran did..Or Roy moving up to beat Ruiz is like what Fitzsimmons did..it really isnt, it really isnt the same kind of feat and should be put into perspective when all is said and done.

    Just how I see it.

Good post and i agree with lots of your opinions on Shane especially him looking better at Welter than Lightweigt and the same day way ins. Im sure he wouldnt have made 135 back then. However it is what it is and you cant deny the jump he made.
I was:lol: when you mentioned Napoloes because i thought of him, i just kept quiet since Flea wasnt mentioning him:lol: I also agree that Oscar fought the wrong fight, he thought he was just gonna ko the lightweight moving up, and so did I. At the time i thought that no lightweight goes the distance with A prime Oscar. Plus how mosley had struggled with Rivera in the previous fight, but then again The same has been said about Leonard and no one takes away from Durans accomplishment of beating him. Bottom line like i say to the LEonard people. Delahoya had all night to switch his game plan and Oscar still looked great that night he just got edged out. Also Ross would have been outsized big time by Oscar and wouldnt have been able to get Oscars respect as his punching power was limited. I mean i might have him above Oscar in a pfp sense but no way to i see Ross beating a Prime Delahoya, and ive seen countless footage on Ross. Same with Billy Graham. Ralph Dupas did win a JM title i believe but he wouldnt have beat Oscar. Id put Napoloes at even money to beat Oscar, even then im leaning towards Oscar to bust him up and stop him late.

Anyone think Sugar Shane might be in trouble next time out? I got a bad feeling about the Bero fight...maybe Andre is too easy to hit and Shane's power will get him out of Dodge?
