    I'm inclined to believe Floyd would've lost to Williams as well but I don't think Williams was in a position where Patterson owed him a title shot ala Folley, and Machen. Williams' highest rating was 4 during Patterson's reign.

    That's where we differ then. I hold wins over Wills, Godfrey and Loughran to higher esteem over Quarry, Bonavena and Martin. Martin was getting dominated before Sonny gassed out btw, I had it 6-1-2 before the knockout. Martin beat Liston because he had first hand experience as an ex sparring partner who fought a smart, patient fight.

    Was Harry Wills considered for the list? He was the number 1 contender for Dempsey for 4+ years.

    Harry Wills weighed below 200lb?

    He weighed 204lb vs Fulton
    He weighed 211lb vs Norfolk
    He weighed 217lb vs Firpo

    wills rates way up there in general, the biggest duck job of a challenger in boxing history

    wills was 37 years old when Sharkey got to him, he was finished. He didn’t win another fight for 3 years.

    Godfrey is a good win, although there are some question marks. Kevin Smith, author of Sundowners, believes Godfrey was wearing handcuffs for the Sharkey fight. Even if this isn’t true how good was Godfrey? Better than Lyle and Shavers who Quarry beat? Ellis beat Quarry for the title.

    Martin was rated in RINGs top 100 punchers of all time list. He knocked out Karl Mildenberger, Thad Spencer, and he killed Sonny Banks in the ring.

    what about Quarry? Who did Sharkey beat as good as Quarry? Unless you count his incredulous hometown decision vs Schmeling

    were 37 year old Wills and Godfrey as good as Oscar Bonavena? Bonavena took Frazier 10 life or death rounds, gave Ali fits for 15 rounds

    how about Chuvalo? Who was a bull in the ring.

    Ellis beat a lot of really good fighters of that era

    Wills was 85-7-7 when Sharkey beat him and he was pretty much unbeaten since 1917.
    Godfrey was a huge puncher, 80 kos with victories over Uzcudun and Maloney, Maloney whom by the way Sharkey also defeated, alongside Risko, Carnera and Delaney.
    And no, I don't take into account Sharkey's gift victory over Schmeling, but it evens out with Elli's very generous decision over Patterson.
    Wins over Quarry, Bonavena, Martin and Chuvalo are definitely nice but aside from Quarry, I see Loughran and Wills as superior to everyone Ellis defeated.
    Since we're discussing resumes, can you elaborate more on the omission of Pastor? Below 200 lbs that guy is one of the best, his record is incredible.
