Chuvalo is the only lock in my view. McCall, Holyfield, Ali, Holmes, Foreman, and Baer could all potentially make a strong case for the other two spots.

Its no myth Vitali did the huckle buck off a jab and quit against a cream puff puncher.
He doesn't make the list because his chin is unproven due to having a very weak record.

 

It is indeed true that Chuvalo was down once or even twice (long time since I saw it) against Bonavena. The ref ruled both a slip, but they were knockdowns. That puts him a level below McCall (who also faced bigger men).

 

How were Holyfield and Foreman down fewer times than Ali?

Foreman was down four times (once against Ali, once against Young, twice against Lyle). Holyfield was down at least six times (once against Bowe in fight one, twice against Bowe in fight three, once against Bert Cooper, once against Toney, once against Ruiz in fight two).

Ali was dropped three times - four if you want to count Chuck Wepner stepping on his shoe at the same time he hit Ali in the chest. (Nothing to do with chins.)

And who cares if Marion Wilson did or didn't "come to win." It's called best chin. He didn't hide in fights. He was nearly always the aggressor. Besides, he gave as good as he got in most fights.

If you don't think Marion Wilson got hit a lot, you never saw him fight.

Well Frazier stopped Chuvalo, when he busted Chuvalo's eye socket. But Frazier never dropped him, nor did Foreman, nor did anyone else.

Chuvalo's jaw is pretty much without question, known to be amongst the best ever.

While he is somewhat off-balance, his feet aren't tangled up and his toes aren't stepped on. Bonavena lands a hard 1-2 followed by a straight left as Chuvalo throws. It's always the punches landed while you're in the process of throwing that knock you out/down (see Marciano vs Walcott). Bonavena landed and Chuvalo went down. To me that's a knockdown. Maybe not the cleanest knockdown, but still a KD. Not sure whether this is the first or the second.
