That was the fight that indicated to me Whitaker was slipping. But he figured out a way to win.

It's a sleeper pick, but I've always believed Whitaker's best performance was the Pineda fight, at 140.

I think that performance was truly apex Whitaker.

He was really, really, really on effing point in the Pineda fight.

Certainly his best performance at 140 lbs

It would have been nice to see him fight Chavez at 140 lbs right after that instead of Chavez having to fight him at WW over a year later. I would still favor Pernell but it would have given Chavez worshippers one less excuse.

I always admired his performances against Anthony Jones and Harold Brazier. Really showed some nice offense and in-fighting skills in those fights.

He only had 2 fights there and I’m not sure I agree.

What was the other one? Brazier? Harold was kind of past his best by then and not nearly as dangerous as Pineda at the time they met Pernell. Brazier was a solid non-title opponent by then whereas Pineda was coming off a one punch left hook starching of Roger Mayweather for the vacant IBF 140 lb title.
