I know it's been done before but not for a while. Many new posters have joined us since. My picks are -

    1/ Carlos Monzon
    2/ Roberto Duran
    3/ Muhammad Ali

Testimony to Muhammad Ali's greatness that even though he was past prime in this decade (I would nominate him as number one for the sixties) he was still the best heavyweight of the decade, imo, and finishes third only to prime Monzon and Duran.

If the Brawl in Montreal had happened just six months earlier than it did,I would have put Roberto at numero uno.

Briscoe ,win or lose, was always worth a watch. Caught his 1978 bout with Marvelous Marvin the other week.

Put it in any order you like. It will always be Ali, Duran, Monzon.

I think a case can be made for Napoles edging out Ali for #3 spot. At least until around '76 or so.

Have had a good think about this,Fists. I would have Napoles down for number 4 on this list. Another great one.

Two more names that did good work in that decade are Canto and Cervantes.

Canto is top five at least.

    Cervantes is probably top 10.

Canto was great, but hard to have him ahead of Gomez, Zarate, Arguello, Benitez IMO.

Alexis Arguello should definitely also be considered. Went through the decade 1970-79 with a record of 57-3 with 49 KOs/stoppages and won both the Featherweight and Super Featherweights titles during that time.

Duran and Monzon are in the top three; then it is one from quite a few.

    Ali has been mentioned

Holmes resume was a little thin, but it was clear he was special in the 70s.

Foster had an excellent few years.

    Napoles should be mentioned.

Leonard even in the 70s, had beaten another mention in Benitez.

Cervantes should have a nod too (as pointed out)

Also as mentioned Arguello was arguably in his pomp later in the decade

Probably a bit too soon, but Gomez beat another one who should be mentioned in Zarate.

So yeah, a lot of decent candidates for that third slot!!!
