Top 3 underrated heavyweight boxers.

Tokyo Douglas is middle ground here. Sometimes overrated, sometimes underrated, depending on how you feel about Tyson.

I try to be fair to him: he had a great night in Tokyo, but he is not the second coming of Ali.

McCall and Thompson might not be top 3 underrated ever, but their resumes are pretty deep. McCall might be actually.

Damiani also gets forgotten on account of having little resume. All of the 80s heavys who fought Tyson get remembered on here and the better guys who fought Holmes too. Damiani was right there with any of them though. He beat Biggs in a fight where Biggs was either in or very close to his prime and was dominating Mercer before getting his nose shattered. I don't what happened after that, but for a brief period he was a very good fighter with a pretty complete package. Resume was shi t, but h2h he was extra respectable.

Tyson and Witherspoon are under valued on this forum

 

The question largely depends on how we think they ARE rated. There is going to be disagreement about how to measure common opinion, & what weight to give the average fan, man on the street, & expert. And do we equally weigh legacy & head to head?

Take Holmes. Most everyobody has him at least top 10, often top 5.
But so many have said he is underrated for so long...Is he still, or do most folks THINK he is underrated because the underrate....Where he is rated?

 

Holmes is in my top 5.the oldest fighter in my top 10 is Joe Louis.

 

Bill Cayton had scheduled Damiani to face Tyson some time in '88-89, obviously once King took over those plans went straight to the crapper.

Jose Ribalta! Man, whenever I think of that guy, the thought of his fight against Tyson comes to mind and that dramatic looking knockdown that Tyson scored against him. In up close, Tyson fires a right hook to the body and quick as a flash, a right uppercut through the middle. Ribalta goes down like he's been shot. Remarkably, Ribalta is not that badly hurt and gets up but that shock bewildered on his face when he was down was amazing like "what the **** just happened there!"
