I think middleweight is the most debatable of all the lists so far - not that I necessarily disagree with the names but from 5 to 10 and particularly 7 to 10 you could swap names out and have some different names in there without much trouble - Holman Williams, Jake LaMotta, Tommy Ryan... even Tony Zale (if you were feeling generous) - because I honesty don't think there's a lot to choose between them. I'm happy Steele and Walker made the overall top 10 though.

For me that's a no brainer tbh.

I never rated Steel as high some do on here.

For one I'm not entirely convinced there's ever a period of time where he's the clear number 1 in the division.

Good point. In many ways 5-through-TakeYourPick are tight, much in the same way I believe the Top 4 are tight. Although I apparently find the Top 4 tighter than the general Survey consensus, those numbers still help drive home that point. This is the first time the Top 4 all finished over 1,500. And then those 5-7 guys all had the lowest scores for their respective Top 10 finishes. That, I believe, plays to your point here.

And on that note, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on how he is perceived at Middleweight as well.

Hopkins is such a conundrum at middleweight in terms of achievement v H2H.

He held a title in a pretty empty division for the first half of his reign and then unified and established himself as a genuine great in the second half. Unifying against Trinidad and then making half a dozen defenses of the undisputed title is more than enough to put him over the rest of the top 10 but H2H is where it gets interesting.

I'm pretty sure he'd be a handful for any of the top 4 guys but then he'd have his hands full himself with the guys who came directly before him chronologically (Toney, Nunn, McCallum and Jones, of course) who wouldn't get that close to the top 10 themselves (Jones is way too high on the overall list in my view but I digress).

So Hopkins has impressive numbers and proved that he was hard to beat but timing was his friend in building those numbers and I think he's beatable against guys far lower than him in comparison with the four guys above him who most would pick to beat the names lower on the list, I'd say.

I agree with you, and also disagree with you. There are plenty of guys who would give Hopkins a lot of difficulty, and the Big 4 would undoubtedly be among what is perhaps many. I know I'm probably in a small minority, but I think Hopkins had the craft and smarts that he'd be competitive against any Middleweight, both at their best. And I like his chances against most. Not saying he beats everyone. But in a sense, I guess you can say I view Hopkins at 60 like I view Holmes at HW.

I don't mind not seeing him in the top 10 at Middle, it's a stacked division and I think his achievements were more impressive at Welter.

I find Kid McCoy pretty underrated at Middle.

I won't quibble about Robinson being above Hagler here, though it does pain me.

I have to say I’m glad the survey ended without LaMotta in the top 10.

He threw a fight to get a title shot, won it in a sketchy fashion and had a painfully average title reign

Apart from a win over SRR, a great welter who was fighting at that weight in the meeting Jake won, his resume is packed with wins over welters while he was coming in over the middleweight limit — they often had to give up 10 or more pounds to him.

Top 15? Sure. But he’s rightfully not in the top 10.

Mickey Walker making the list is an odd one...not as odd as having Langford in the top twenty but i guess a one-off can explain that maybe...some weird head-to-head potential list or something...Mike Gibbons is one of six top ten locks IMO. Overall i'm a little uncomfy with our stab at MW. There's very little that is really objectionable but so much seems a bit...off.

Steele, Walker & Jones are too high. Ryan, Williams & Gibbons too low. Imo

I think Holman Williams should definitely be above Ketchel.
