I wonder how much vodka one needs to drink to make a list like this? I seriously doubt the author of the list knew anything about some of the boxers on the list, except their name and results of fights. Not to mention that many names are listed twice. Top 25 Best Bare-Knuckle Boxers Ever 1. Simon Byrne - Ireland 2. Ben Caunt - England 3. Tom Cribb - England 4. Lenny McLean - England 5. Daniel Mendoza - England 6. Tom Molineaux - US 7. Tom Sayers - England 8. Roy Shaw - England 9. John L. Sullivan (first heavyweight champion) - US 10. William 'Bendigo' Thompson - England 11. Bartley Gorman - England/Ireland 12. "Nonpareil" Jack Dempsey - United States 13. Jack McAuliffe - United States 14. Barney Aaron - United States 15. Abe Hicken - United States 16. Sam Collyer - United States 17. Caleb Baldwin - England 18. Dutch Sam - England 19. Jack Randall - England 20. Dick Curtis - England 21. Young Dutch Sam - England 22. Jack Hannan - England 23. Johnny Broome - England 24. Jonny Walker - England 25. Bob Travers - England 26. Johnny Moneghan - United States 27. James Hart - United States 28. Johnny Moneghan - United States 29. Barney Aaron - United States 30. Patrick Scotty Brannigan - United States 31. Owney Geoghegan - United States 32. Sam Collyer - United States 33. Billy Edwards - United States 34. Arthur Chambers - United States 35. Charley Norton - United States
I don't think there are more than several people in the world who have seen fight reports of Sam Collyer, John Monoghan, Jim Hart, 'Scotty' or Owen Geogegan.
Some interesting stuff about simon byrne the irishman at number 1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Byrne
No Hen Pearce??? He is top ten imo. The Rocky Marciano of his era. With the unbeating 7-0 record to boot.
Having guys like McLean and Shaw on the list is absurd. Those guys are nothing more than overhyped bar brawlers, not necisarily verry good ones. Stonehands would knock them both over with one sweep of his arm. To suggest that they should be ranked among men like Cribb and Mendoza who were champions of their eras is more than a stretch.
Mace would be a prety good pick for the best pound for pound bareknuckle boxer of all time. He cleaned house from middleweight to heavyweight and unified the British and American titles effectivley becoming the first world champion. He also did more to develop moderm boxing technique than any man since Daniel Mendoza.
couldn't see spring, belcher, king or heenan either.too many modern guys lacking in proper credentials.
Daniel Mendoza, 'Dutch' Sam, Jem Belcher, Tom Sayers and Jem Mace were p4p Bare Knuckle fighters. Jem Belcher, Hen' Pearce and Tom Cribb should be riding at the top of a heavyweight list.
This is the worst list I have seen. No Figg, Broughton, Brain, Belcher, Pearce, or Spring? Yikes. Cribb deserves his high rating and should also rate ahead of Byrne and Caunt. He is not a bad pick for number one. Sullivan also should move up a few notches.
