I don't Holyfield was all that great at absorbing body shots. I mean he took them, he was mentally tough as hell, but I've seen him hurt or momentarily doubled over numerous times by bodywork from the likes of Bowe, Foreman, Moorer, Lewis, and eventually Toney (Holyfield was over 40 by then though). I think Holyfield was great at recovering quickly after being hurt, and just plain good at fighting while hurt. The fighter with the most "iron body" I have ever seen is Muhammad Ali. He took an absolute drubbing to the body in Manila, in over 100 degree weather, and still finished very strong. Foreman landed hard body shots on him, Ali took them, and came back strong. Frazier also gave Ali a beating to the body in the FOTC and Ali was going strong in the late rounds until the 15th. James Toney is another guy who takes body shots very well. Vassily Jirov went to his body all night long, and Toney took them, and was the stronger fighter at the end of the fight. I think he suffered a lacerated kidney against Rahman, took hard body shots from Peter, etc..
You must have witnessed the greatest fights! Although i was not able to see those fights mentioned, you made the best details out of it mate!:thumbsup
Good post, i shouldnt have put Holyfield because i havent seen him fight alot in his prime to be honest. Ali i cant comment on. I only follow modern day boxing. I became a hardcore boxing fan around 10 years old, im 16 now. I dont now much about the fighters under 2000 (I know some tho)
I have boxed for a few times in the gym and was hurt most of the time with body shots. I admire this boxers that took them and fought all the way out. Hurts like ****ing hell tho.
I don't know, probably not, I haven't seen Mosley stop too many guys to the body recently like he used to, but I don't think that means Margarito is great at taking it to the body. He was hurt from the first body shot Mosley landed. He was hurt repeatedly to the body. If a fighter repeatedly gets hurt or dropped from shots to the chin, but fights through and doesn't get knocked out, is that a representation of him having a great chin? I think that's more to do with heart and recovery skills than having a great chin. Much like in this case in Margarito getting hurt to the body but surviving, I think that shows his heart, not his iron body. Whereas when you look at fighters like James Toney & Muhammad Ali, these guys got hit repeatedly to the body throughout the fight. They didn't double over, it didn't easily open up shots to the head because they'd drop their hands from the pain, they didn't get softened up. They in fact, finished the fights strong despite being pummeled to the body. **** yeah, they hurt like hell. Like Tyson said, "Boxing is a hurt business".
Here are the shortened versions of a couple of them. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TL9GI8-Skko[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVJ3baetWc0[/ame]
Pretty much anyone with a turtle shell defense had an Iron Body... Clottey Winky Wright Arthur Abraham Ward Mayweather Opponents bang away at their ribs all night trying to slow them down or tire them out and they just take that **** like it's the best massage in life.
Clottey comes to mind. He took some tremendous shots to the body against Pac and continued to push forward.
Hattons body aint all that after the 5th round in the Urango fight he held on for dear life after taking body shots, he went from looking dazzling till he took the body shot then bear hugged Urango for the rest of the fight.
The idea that Rios belongs in the same list as those guys is ludicrous. Rios is overhyped atm. Let's see him face a proper opponent and then we can BEGIN to determine what his qualities are.
We would have to wait for Iron bodies to have a definitive list , but to name Pacquiao and Maidana as the best is ludacris. They were both in the movie "Glass Bodies" [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMf5u6c5ZPo[/ame] Vitali is a good choice though, the 10+ right hands he took in a row vs Lewis, as well as recently vs Briggs, he got some good flurries while clinching and he didn't seem to notice it.
