I really got interested in him some time back while reading a Clyde Gray interview. When Perkins came up Gray mentioned that although he wasn't a big hitter, he was almost impossible to hit. It intrigued me. Gray was undefeated and up and coming whilst Perkins was 33. I watched as many clips or fights as I could of Perkins and found him to be an absolute genius in defense. All subtle and deft moves, while finding the perfect counter. Also I should mention that 18 of his 20 losses were in the opponent's hometown.
Since Willie Pep, hmmm? What about one of the greatest CLASSIC boxers since Pep, named Billy Graham... In 126 bouts against some great fighters as Gavilan, Basillio, Giardello, Paddy Young etc, Billy Graham was NEVER KO'D, NEVER truly HURT...I had the pleasure of seeing Graham from the beginning...A beautiful left jab combined with an IRON chin...Great combination stylist...
Do not watch Ursua fight - boxrec got it wrong - it's just some guy pretending to be Zapata in there and he's failing miserably
Watch Jimmy Young vs Ali, Norton and Foreman and tell me that Young wasn't a defensive master. He officailly won only the Foreman fight which proves a guy should only have to worry about his opponent and not the three ringside officials as well.
Nope, it was Zapata, Ursua really was that much of a monster :tong Nightcrawler: Enjoy Zapata, ace fighter :good Anyone have his fight with Netrnoi Sor Vorasingh?
Kalule was a pretty accurate puncher, though, who was content to stay back and counter-punch in the pocket. Tough not to take punches in that situation, so Leonard opted to swarm instead. But Leonard out-boxed El Radar in their fight, and showed a defense that was just as effective, maybe more so that Wilfred's that evening. That alone tells me that Leonard had a pretty sound, underrated defense.
I'd include: Benitez (in his relatively short prime) Starling Whitaker Don't know enough about Locche but by reputation he'd certainly make the cut
