Your first choice is one of the wisest and smartest picks I have seen on here for a while. Jones was indeed the fastest heavyweight to lace up a pair of gloves, even though he only had one fight at the weight. Jones never moved much against Ruiz, so we have no evidence of what his footspeed was like at the weight. Handspeed I agree.

All kinds of weird guys have fought "at heavyweight", but if you mean guys that qualified for the division legitimately, your five picks are reasonable enough - however, i'd say that Patterson should be higher. He was Tyson's choice as far as handspeed went. I'd have him above Ali, anyway.

Not Louis. He was fast, but it was more the distance and his control of that distance.

i heard tony tubbs hands where very fast

this is a off the hip assesment of a fringe champion being compared to greats but i believe corrie sanders hands where everybit as fast as tysons... at least in the tyson later days (when he still had amazing handspeed)

    Number one Patterson.

Sorry but RJJ doesn't count. ONE fight doesn't make a heavyweight, especially against a pretender like Ruiz who would noe have been a champion in previous ERAs. Otherwise we have to count all the fast feathrweights who eventually fought at least one fight a heavyweight.

Floyd Patterson should be #1, followed by Ali then Louis. Jones does not count as a heavyweight, and besides, if he had fought a real live heavyweight with a punch, you'd have no basis at all for including him.

If we are talking pure speed hand speed, guys like Jim Corbett, Bruce Seldon, Herbie Hide, Mike Dokes, Larry Holmes, and Wlad Klitschko are in the mix.

Jones only fought once at heavy, and did not show great speed in that match.

Dempsey, and Sanders for sure. Picking out who had the best hand speed is a bit harder than saying who were the best punchers or who had the best chin.

I don't see how Jones can not be included in any list like this. He weighed in as a heavyweight and fought for the championship. For one night he was a legitimate heavy and deserves to be mentioned, imo.

(I agree he had probably the fastest hands too.)
