Dude...Cotto-Margarito ahead of Vazquez-Marquez III?

Any single fight in that trilogy > any other fight in the last ten years.

    GTFO.

Corrales vs Castillo I's round 8 alone was better than all three of their fights put together. If you like Vasquez vs Marquez III, so be it, I like Cotto/Margarito more.

Are you a huge Margarito fan? That's the only explanation. You can't sit there and tell me that fight was as competitive and dramatic as Izzy-Rafa III.

Cotto/Margarito was a great fight - but there were others with much better back and forth action such as the Vazquez/Marquez 3 or the shamefully overlooked Cassamayor/Katsidis fight.

Vazquz/Marquez III probably deserves top honors this year.

    Not a huge fan.

I didn't think the Vasquez/Marquez III fight was all that competitive after the knockdown. Marquez was just in survival mode.

We don't have to argue you about it. Cotto vs Margarito was my favourite of the year, it certainly didn't have the most action, but neither did Vasquez/Marquez II. You like what you like, and I like what I like. There doesn't have to be a hidden agenda, and I certainly wouldn't give a fight the nod as FOTY because one of my favourite fighters is involved. Stop being an idiot.

This thread was supposed to discuss everybody's top 5, not pull my list apart.

    Huh?

And speaking noncompetitive. Repeat viewing of Cotto/Margarito are boring because it looks like a bulldozing. All the suspense of the fight came from whether or not Margarito could hold. Otherwise, you just see all these punches Margarito is actually landing --- Cotto's "outboxing" him is overstated.

No need to namecall, mister sassy pants! :tong

And uh...sorry, but I have to assume there's an agenda when someone says Cotto-Margarito was a better fight than Vazquez-Marquez III. I mean, sure, this stuff is subjective...to a point...:yep

No offense, but there really isn't really any reasonable way I can see for someone without a vested interest to rate the former fight above the latter. I just find it very hard to believe. Can't hold being incredulous against me when that's the only instinctive reaction I can possibly have. I realize and readily admit that I'm a bit biased toward the Trilogy as they were two of my favorite fighters even before they first met, but an overwhelming majority of boxing fans and writers have echoed my sentiments that their fights were high water marks for the sport of the last few years.

These sentiments can be qualified, whether you like either fighter or not, whether you're even a fan of lower weight classes or not - by the evenly matched nature of the fights, the level of skill, particularly offensive skill (which made it so exciting) in all the fights, and the amount of back-and-forth action and drama in all the fights. It wasn't just some entertaining brawl, it was a war between two offensive masters who positively destroyed one another.

Cotto-Margarito was a good fight between the two top guys at the time in probably the most popular weight class at the time...but which of those qualities mentioned above apply to it? Was the fight evenly matched throughout? Did both guys show p4p offensive skill consistently throughout the entire fight? Was there back and forth action and drama throughout? How can you qualify it as the FOTY in the face of fights that the overwhelming majority (excluding biased nuthuggers who don't even pay attention to the sport as a whole) unanimously deem superior??
