Holyfield hardly "struggled" with Holmes and Foreman - both top five ATGs, btw - he beat them both by a wide margin. And Holyfield hardly got "owned" by Moorer. He lost a squeaker decision that many at the time thought should have gone his way, and he had Moorer on the canvas. Oh, and he cracked that glass chin pretty good in their second fight, putting Moorer on the canvas multiple times before taking him out in the 8th. Evander Holyfield is a clear top ten candidate, and should rightly rate above the weak chinned Lewis. Holyfield also has victories over two of the other 4 top guys in the era, Bowe and Tyson, when it mattered, instead of when they were old and past, like Holyfield and Tyson were when Lewis finally got around to fighting them.
1. Muhammad Ali 2. Joe Louis 3. Mike Tyson 4. Sonny Liston 5. George Foreman The top 2 are set in stone, 3rd place is fairly solid, 4 & 5 may change at times but they are never outside of my top 10.
I've gotta disagree with you there. Sure Lewis may have lost twice, but he DID avenge those losses and walked away from boxing having beaten every man he ever stepped into the ring with. I'd say Tyson is overrated FAR more than Lewis will ever be simply due to the ridiculous amount of potential he had to do so much more then he managed to do.
Well, I donßt do any lists anymore but instead rate them in a tier system. That´s imo easier and fairer. My Tier 1 would consist of: Muhammad Ali Joe Louis My tier 2 would consist of: Rocky Marciano Larry Holmes Lennox Lewis So, it happens those are the 5 hws you wanted. None of them are my favourites so. Those are Jack Johnson, Max Schmeling, Floyd Patterson and Jack Dempsey.
That´s the same as with Pavlik-Taylor II. Holy did better but still lost but some people think he won because he did better. A bit delusional but everyone to his own liking.
I do i had the rematch 115-113 for Holyfield Plus i had the first fight for Lewis big, but i recently watched it without any biased Ian Darke and Glen McCrory commentary and when i tallied the rounds up it was 115-115. It was as though Lewis was going to be awarded the rematch to make up for the perceived robbery the first time. What gets me about Lewis fans is they have just as many excuses to why he lost as the Tyson fans who get alot of flack. Lewis has only ever beaten himself, it was a lucky punch, Lewis wasnt training properly, Lewis wasnt training for Vitali etc. Guys Lewis isnt the Terminator, he was underated when he was fighting and now he is retiered he is being severly overated.
This is the type of list that really pisses me off... No Foreman in the top 10? Are you kidding me? I have been outspoken about this for years on this board, but it always amazes me when I see lists like this. Remember if Ali never beat Foreman not nearly as many people who rate in number one, that fight made him Godlike. My list: 1. George Foreman (Think people were scared of Tyson in his prime... Please, one of the most devastating punches of all time. Demolished all time greats and never got the rematch he wanted. What puts him at one for me though was becoming the oldest ever to win the HW title, purely amazing... Now I have no problem with people putting the likes of Louis of Ali above Foreman, but damnit he belongs in the top 5 and most certainly the top 10..) 2. Mohammed Ali 3. Joe Louis 4. Rocky Marciano 5. Holmes/Lewis :good
Why? He achieved something that is considered one of the greatest (and most difficult) things in boxing or sports history... and that was just his second careeer
Because there are more than enough fighters that achieved similar things but beat better opposition and looked better in doing so.
similar things? How many became the LEGITIMATE HW champion in their mid 40s? His competition speaks for itself and the fact that not only did the great Ali refuse to give Foreman a rematch, but admitted he was out on his feet 3 separate times during their fight...
